guess you don't like the interaction of manual cars, Mr journalist - no wonder they are dying out.
I just configured the Performance Pack and exhaust with the manual box...

Indeed, you are stating the bleeding obvious. Expensive is subjective. Expensive for you, might not be for someone else.
Expensive is an objective fact. They're charging ~£5k for some bolt-on tat available at lower prices elsewhere.

I think one of the reasons for these performance packs is that they can get away with testing the emissions on the standard car, then add these as an optional extra, and they don't get counted towards them

Expensive is totally subjective. It varies from one person to another (or one subject to an other, hence the word).

You might consider an Akra 3/25 Ti exhaust as tat, some don't. You certainly won't save much by buying separately.

Some people may prefer the peace of mind of keeping the warranty and don't like aftermarket stuff, hence the very subjectivity. It's about choice.

What performance do you get with this exhaust!
0 bhp increase and 7kg weight advantage, that's all!

If you was getting around 20 bhp more then I can understand why you should get one, but at the moment you are paying for a quality exhaust that just gives you extra noise.

"sport exhaust" on mclarens, porsches and ferraris generally costs st loads and doesn't give you any more power but people buy them

there's so many better aftermarket options for the golf though, you'd be mad imo

I still don't understand why we don't get a manual choice for the R estate.

For what reason are VW not allowing this option for manual hatch owners ? To push DSG sales maybe ?

They are, not sure why the article says otherwise...

Even Porsche will sell you a sports exhaust for less than £3K - not titanium or Akrapovic though - maybe VW are learning from the best.
Akrapovic is the magic word. There is a reason why it's so expensive. It's the best exhaust manufacturer in the world. By a mile.

I've never understood the cynicism directed towards the Golf R in particular regarding lease deals etc. If it allows more people access to what they want that can't be a bad thing can it? It's not as if we're all being forced to have one for crissakes.

rolleyes

Because all you Type R /RS owners buy your cars for cash I suppose?

For my £36,000 golf estate I pay the princely sum of £159+vat per month for 2 years. £2,000 deposit. It’s a steal.

but the noise is a weak point of the R hence VW fit a speaker under the bonnet to simulate it

Id pay extra for a quiet exhaust. They make the most irritating noise ive ever heard from a factory standard car.

try Kreisseg for that formula one sound, but the $5k bill makes the Akrapovic look cheap as well.

andrewparker - that's not what the official VW accessories brochure indicates, but you can spec a manual in "Build your VW" ?

Or you could forego the PP, get the lighter better looking (IMHO) Pretorias, and then pay VW £500 to replace the front discs and pads with the Clubsport S set up (which I believe is the same as the PP).

Having ruined my brakes over a few trackdays, my R is in for the Clubsport S upgrade tomorrow...
Friend of mine has had this done - the VW pads in the upgrade still aren't up to track use, stick to short stints and you may be OK but his overheated and glazed. I'd suggest you look for a more track focused pad.

They fit fine under the 18" wheels, so assuming the PP is the same that's not an issue.

It would be useful if VW started naming these after the monthly PCP payments, e.g. Golf 325 R for £325 per month?
