OK, for the benefit of this thread I've done 6,164 miles in my E91, bought 852 litres of petrol at a cost of £1,059.21.

The "CURRENT" MOT cost £35 and insurance was £304.49 in April 2018.

No need for a service yet as it had a main dealer one in December 2016 and that era of BMW only needs servicing on distance/time parameters, so for my use once in 2 years.

But it did let me down last year when the electric water pump died - £500+ bill. eek

So £1,431.20 excluding fuel in a year, which works out at less than £120 a month for the benefit of the renters.

Probably some potential depreciation, but it works for me and is way cheaper than sp*nking money on a rental! laugh

After all my Dad always told me if you can't buy it you can't afford it! blah

Plus RFL?
Plus Depreciation?
...and if it was 2-and-a-quarter years since your service, it's overdue wink

Plus, my dad told me never to pay more than I need to, or waste money, that why I've not paid cash for a car since 2003 wink

Maybe an interesting metric would be cost per mile.

People that spend £200/mth on an old car but do a couple of thousand a year may end up spending more per mile than those than spend 4 times as much but do 15,000/yr.

2016 M135i,

Insurance £30
Fuel £100
VED £24 ish

Depreciation, not sure, £200 ish ? paid £21200 in May last year, so ten months ago, prob worth around 19 now, maybe a smidge less but will level off a bit

Servicing, £101 tomorrow after nearly a year for brake fluid, due a big one next year, maybe £500, so maybe £30 a month until I take it out of the main dealer network and DIY it, too valuable at the moment.

Tyres, not replaced yet, £600 a set for MPSS or therabouts, £20 a month maybe ?

Somewhere around £400 a month all in on average I reckon.

Re-calculated mine now that I've moved from Car Allowance to finance / lease my own car, back to a cheaper company car while I save for a deposit.

2018 Ford Fiesta Titanium 5dr 1.0 EcoBoost 125PS

BIK Tax: £68.25
Trade-down repayment: -£37.50 after tax
Fuel: £120/month on average
No insurance, servicing etc
Total: ~£150/month

Basically half my total outlay for my previous car (PCP finance, partially paid by car allowance, plus insurance, VED, servicing and consumables).

So the company car is much better value for money for me, and the reduced hassle of not dealing with insurance and servicing etc.

Skoda Superb 2014
(was a year old when I got it, had 2k on clock)
Tax £2.62 a month
Insurance £18
Depreciation from WBAC now price £100
50+ mpg
Since owned about 1k in servicing & tyres
So say £140 a month since owned, inc depreciation

£800 two years ago. No expenditure other than tax and insurance. To my eye it looks respectable.

Only a 520i, but drives well, without issues.
Passed its second mot in my ownership without any expense. I would like something more fun to drive but lemonade tastes and tapwater money smile

Resurrecting this a bit since electric cars are becoming more common and I've recently moved into an EV myself. Would be interested to know how this stacks up against other cars, and also other EVs / hybrids.

I also think this serves to highlight that the highish purchase / lease cost of EVs is (currently at least) offset by lower fuel costs.

BMW i3 120Ah leased from Evezy (I do have a referral code if anyone is interested after reading this...)

£399 pcm (inc. insurance, maintenance & public charging on Polar network)

12k miles per annum allowance and 8p per mile excess up to 15k miles per annum.

I do 15k miles per annum and average about 4.6 mi/kWh.

I pay 13p per kWh at home, but a significant amount of 'fuel' has been free by using Polar public chargers. Some other public charging has been on other networks, which charge about 25p-35p per kWh.

So far I've done 3k miles with a total (home and public) charging cost of £75. (ie. 2.5p per mile on electricity alone).

The total cost to drive 15k miles in a year is therefore:

(399x12) + (0.08x3000) + (0.025 x 15000) = £5,403

So the cost per mile is 36p

Or £450 a month doing 15k miles per year

Not expensive though either.

This compares to my two previous leases which were a diesel DS3 (26p per mile over 16.5k miles) and a diesel Skoda Superb (37p per mile over 15k miles).

These were both good, cheap lease deals at the time (2.5 years ago for the Superb and 4 years ago for the DS3).

Especially given the OTR price of each, and the fact that it's a monthly rolling contract without a 24 month commitment, the i3 is by far the best deal of the three.

I like the i3 much, much more than either of those two, plus I'm not polluting schools etc as I drive to work...

57 plate BMW 530d Touring - 12 months and 20,000 miles.

Purchased for £4750

Fuel £3700 at 33mpg

Starter motor £120
Swirl flaps mod £40
New drop links, roll bar bushes, control arms £600
Glow plug controller and plugs £200
EGR issues £200
Pano roof issue £100
Tax £260
Insurance £300
Battery £200

Sold for £5250

So £5220 over the year and 20k, so £425 month or 26ppm

2015 F11 520d Touring
Finance £238 month so £2856 year
Fuel £2020 at 45mpg
Tax £120
Insurance £260

£5256 a year so £438 month or 26ppm

So running a 12 year old car with no depreciation at all, in fact made £500 over a year and 20k miles, was only saving me.....nothing really.

I should add the 520d is at nearly 6 months old, I have doubled everything for 12 months. I will post again when it gets to a year old, if I keep it that long.

I've been having a bit of fun working out the monthly cost of the E-type since I bought it 37 years ago. Now no flaming since this is a bit of fun and sheer guesswork, but cost of purchase plus a rebuild in 1987 and another rebuild in 2014 comes to £78,000 so £175 per month. 125,000 miles at (hmm now this is a guess) say 50 per litre (It wasn't even £1 a gallon when I bought her) at 20 mpg is around 22,500 litres so £11,250 so £25 per month. Tax has been nil for years but let's say a fiver. Insurance has always been peanuts until the last ten years due to value so again I guess £25. Servicing next to nowt really but 15 litres of antifreeze every two years is a few quid. Oil consumption (I know you aren't going to believe this) has been virtually nil all the time except for 2013 when she was worn out and used a few litres but I'll be charitable and ignore that. Halfords 20/50 is £4 per litre so 10 litres every two years over 37 years is £740 so £2 per month. And that's at today's prices. MOT at say £40 p.a equals about £3 per month. Tyres? say 20,000 per set on radials at £500 the four and prices ahve remained pretty stable from memory so I'll say six sets at £400 so £2,400 so £6 per month. Add in ancillary costs (I have four ring binders of bills) and I am going to guess overall at £120,000 which comes out at £270 per month. The problem arises when you add in the residual value which today is about £175,000 but the car is not and will never be for sale. So £270 per month for a fun car for high days and holidays. I'll take that.

Decided to ditch sports cars when I moved house.

Bought a freshly imported 2001 Subaru Forester S/tb Sti 3 years ago.
Purchase price £5500
6000 miles per annum.
£120 per month fuel
£267 a year road tax
£180 per year insurance
In the 3 years I've replaced a wheel bearing ( about £120) and a centre exhaust with cat (£100 changed myself), front brake pads (£45, changed myself).

Depreciation, very little if at all. They're for sale now at more, but I'd probably sell at £4500.

I'm quite happy with that.

Hope you don't mind but I did a rough cost per mile sum, and it seems about average at 40p a mile. My only point is that fuel is a major cost in the cost per mile.

No idea about tax or fuel but basic car costs circa £250 taking into account insurance and servicing. Car paid for outright so can’t factor that in.

I don't mind at all, that's quite interesting. It is a thirsty beast, but even with that its still fairly cheap to me, mostly down to the fact it has little to no depreciation.

Of course you have got to factor it in, otherwise it is pointless giving any figure.

So £250 a month is not taking into account fuel or depreciation?

You paid £x for it? How long have you had it, what is it worth now?

For a Ghibli it could be anything from £300 a month to £700 a month.

Yes - fuel has got to be factored in really, as has depreciation, insurance, maintenance, tyres, tax, MOT, servicing etc - anything specific to that car basically.

If I didn't factor in fuel and the inclusive insurance etc it would make my i3 seem very expensive compared to my previous cars - when in reality it's comparable in simple terms, but actually much better value given the high OTR price.

Both the fuel and tax will be similar on any other car, so whilst it is relevant to how much it costs to run the car (which is difficult for me as some of my fuel gets paid for by my employer) the baseline figure of servicing and insurance is all that I have . No idea what the depreciation is. Probably a fk load.

2017 Volvo V40 T3 with nearly every option ticked

Lease: £330.64 amortised including the initial 'deposit' and over mileage charges
Insurance: £30.83 per month including business use, etc.
Tax: Nil
MOT: Nil
Service: £17.63 per month (two services in 3 years; one minor, one major)
Fuel: £166 per month based on 14k miles per year
Maintenance: £15 per month (one set of tyres per year)

Total: £560.10 per month, or 48ppm. Ouch. Luckily I claim just over half the total cost back on business miles.

My third, and probably last, lease vehicle.
