I wish I didn’t live in London.

My insurance is £1000/year. And I’m in a good cheap part of London.

It’d be £650 back in Hertfordshire.

Amazed at how cheap some of your insurance is still though!

I’m assuming most of these policies are social domestic and commuting?

Whereas I have to have class 1 business which I’d guess pushes it up a bit.
You’re getting mugged off.

I pay £425 a year based on 25k a year. Business insurance which only added £15 to the yearly cost from social.
I got 6 points for speeding and had a claim 2 years ago. Got 2 years NCB.
I live in Z3 west side.
My mate lives 2 miles up the road and pays £120 a year for his e39m5 on classic insurance. Pretty sure his F430 is not much more than £500.

You need to start shopping around.

No real depreciation to speak of. Still love the old brute.

I was a bit surprised by this myself. I use to do about 7000 miles a year in London (Sutton), payed around £300 a year. I've moved down to West Sussex last October, now doing about 19000 miles a year, insurance is now £200 a year, even though my mileage has gone up not that far off a multiple of three.

But I do have a 14 year NCB, at 32 years old, and you want to be pretty desperate to steal a twingo...

Volvo V70.... a bit smokey ....Italian tune up.....PRICELESS smilesmile

All cars cost us....how can a car cost nothing to run.?..if you don't want to know the costs....or if you do...you can't afford it...get off the roads....get on a bus and free up the roads for the rest of us

What I can't understand is those that want to keep the miles off their car.... it looses money not being used...the more miles it does for you the better the value

Unless its a 'classic'.

My NSX has cost me just under £6k during the 5 years I've owned it. Parts only, no labour. Not including fuel or insurance. It's done around 8k miles in that time but should be worth a little more than I paid for it.

£670 month (2 bank loans)

When I bought it, I was meant to pay off the loan for the GTI which I sold. I've still not got round to that (nearly 2 years later!). I've also now spent the gti loan money on the house instead laugh Oh well. Must find out how long until it's paid off, can't be long now.

2017 Juke Nismo RS.

£200 pm on the purchase loan - 1 year left but will be paid off with house sale later this year.
Average monthly running cost is £150 - very few miles to my commute, £262 pa insurance, £235 tax.

I'll only count the depreciation when the car is sold.

We sold 6 months ago a 1 owner from new 80k mile Nissan Primera on a 51 plate with fsh and 12 months mot with no advisories.

Car had zero rust, ran without fault and the guy local to us still has it and its cost him nothing apart from fuel.
If you want to save money OP look out for something like this, it'll get you from A to B just as well as the Golf will.
The Primera was £550..

Trust me, I have shopped around. Done the comparison sites, changed lots of variables to see how the price changed. Called up to see if there was a better price. I’d love to know what I’m doing wrong or what I could be doing better.

I’m near Vauxhall with a residents permit for the road.

30 years old. Self employed in media industry. Full, clean license for 10 years with 10 years no claims with motorbike license too. Had a non fault claim two years ago for £2.5k is my only blemish. 7k business miles a year. 9k total. Class 1 business.

It’s a 2015 plate £17k valued BMW 330D I’m currently insuring. Without black box or dashcam £950 was the best price I could get for 20 something odd days in advance when it’s meant to be cheaper.

I’d love to know why all the comparison sites aren’t giving me a better price or what I’m doing wrong.

That might not be helping. AIUI for anyone remotely in the media there is an assumption that you *may* take someone famous in the car, have a crash with the celebrity injured and leave the insurer on the hook for loss of earnings potentially in the millions.

It definitely won't help!

Many years ago I was working in the claims department of the firm that insured the coach company taking Bucks Fizz somewhere when it had a crash on the way. One claim that cost millions! eek

But after paying £570 for road tax on my Z4M in January I really don't want to think about monthly cost - so long as I can afford it I'll keep it!

Well I’d say that’s ridiculous I don’t have famous people in my car but then I did once give a lift once to a singer who had a top 10 hit some weeks later. So maybe that counts haha.

However... in all seriousness I’d have thought all insurance companies cover themselves fairly well with max payouts in their t&c’s. Otherwise any high earners own insurance would be a fortune.

Maybe I’ll change my job title to something else just to see if that’s what’s causing me to have a higher premium than it seems I should.

Be interested to know. Its all just probability and stats based isn’t it so there must be specific things that push prices up.

I sat and worked this out the other month actually.
36 Year Old, Living in Kingston On Thames (parked underground in secure parking).
Estimated Mileage: 1000 per month (mostly commuting to see family and checking on my house which I'll hopefully sell within 6 months so should reduce down a little).

2016 640d. Owned Outright.

Tax: ~£12
Insurance: £54
Fuel: £150 (@roughly 15 pence per mile). I average 45mpg, but can be towards 50mpg on a run.
Warranty (BMW): £70
Depreciation: £375
Tyres: £16 (estimate based on replacing all four every 3 years).

Total: £682.

It made me stop and think for a moment to be honest. I guess when I bought the car I put the depreciation to the back of my mind because I wanted a 6 series over a 3 or a 4 series and at that time I was not living in London and was doing higher mileage.

The BMW warranty is expensive, but I guess I wanted peace of mind.

I suspect once I sell my house in the Midlands I will have to strongly consider getting rid of the car (although I do love it) as It will be parked up for 2-3 weeks at a time and still costing me the best part of £700 a month. Its Euro 6 compliant which will hopefully prevent it losing all value when the ULEZ is extended in 2021.

When you stop and think "Hey, the first £15000 of my wage is being spent on my car." it does make you wonder if it is really worth it.

Got to be your job title.
Do you have a lady added? I ask this as when I added my misses on comparison sites it did knock £50 off.

Have you tried ones not listed on comparison sites?
I went with footman james for 2 years they are cheap for classic/modern classic BMWs but also do normal cars, this year esure was cheapest for me.

Richmond based 35yo with not a very clean license as above.

Sadly it does, I guess I have never been that concerned before, living in the sticks a car has been a needed since I passed my test at 17, I relocated to Kingston/London 6 months ago, still use the car but its really only to visit family etc in the Midlands and arguably I could easily use ZipCar to do this.

Its a sad realisation however, as I have always owned my own car and it will be a big decision if I do decide to get rid, however I could get rid and get something that might appreciate... might lessen the blow somewhat. The other issue is that to find rental accommodation with decent parking costs extra, so there is a 'hidden' cost there that I have not factored in.

The 3008 family car is cheap as chips on a lease:

£228 per month, no deposit no fees
Tax £0 as included
Maintenance £10 as will only need 1 service over the term
Insurance £12
Fuel £90 as it returns 40mpg

Glad the lease option was so cheap as the equivalent depreciation on buying would have been more even at max discount, not to mention around £40 opportunity cost at 2%.

I own the Megane as it's also my track day car but the figures are somewhat skewed by the cost of consumables, fuel and frequent oil changes.

Take into consideration that the comparison sites have vested interests (eg the Admiral group owns Confused.com, Esure owns Go Compare etc) and do not include all insurance companies.

Not to mention that every instance company is different on how they load things.

My wife had someone go into the back of her last month and my insurance is up for renewal next month so I'm getting quotes. Cheapest one goes up by £20 (yet still cheaper than my renewal) declaring it...yet another company and it goes down by £1!

Equally I did consider if to "remap" mine, it responds well to a remap in that it adds >20% but that really bumps up insurance by £150 (a 50% increase!)

If however I was to modify it *more* it would drop the price down to cheaper than previously, but I would need to modify it significantly.
