My W210 Mercedes E55 AMG:

Monthly Payment £0
Depreciation £0
Tax £20
Insurance £20
MOT £3
Fuel £57 (3000 miles pa)

Total payment £100 per month

My Peugeot 205 Diesel :

Monthly Payment £0
Depreciation £0
Tax £20
MOT £3
Insurance £33
Fuel £140 (17000 miles pa)

Total payment £196 per month

I work on all my cars myself so have minimal labour costs and source parts at the best prices when I need them.

I could never bring myself to lease cars as the cost is astronomical compared to owning your car bought outright. I was always under the impression that people who lease have money to burn smile

ETA: MOT is NOT £40 a month lol, now adjusted accordingly smile

£500/£700 could conceivably equate to the same percentage of another persons monthly disposable income - could be one of those £1200 a month Macca 570s deals!

This thread has shocked me...my car is costing a ridiculous amount of money...and I don't even like it that much.

Insurance £200

Tyres and Servicing etc £150

Fuel £400

Total £1250

If it was a Ferrari costing that much I wouldn't care at all...time to buy a cheaper car outright I think!
That’s exactly £1 a mile - for a diesel SUV

Wow.

Not really. At least one if not 2 of my cars are zero depreciation. The 3rd is probably terrible, but it doesn't matter unless I sell the car. Which I won't. By the time I sell, the cost per month will be half what it has been to date. So what figure should we use? Interest on the capital tied up? Makes no sense. How about inflation depleting the buying power of that capital? Who cares. If you need that sort of fixed cost or certainty, there's always leasing.
How about what you paid for them divided by number of months owned less current value. That's probably as accurate as we can get it.

Only if I cash in right now. Which I won't. So it's meaningless.

Thank you for your valuable input.

Why don’t you explain to me where I’m going wrong, as I’m genuinely interested to know where?

(IMO, as a newly posting member, you should at least try to engage & form an online persona, smart-arse one sentence replies don’t pass muster or add to the discussion - so why not fill out your garage section in your profile & we can appreciate the car(s) you have? We’re all here as we like cars, and talking about them, so contribute!).

How soon can you sack it off?

That would keep me awake at night.

Hi Prinny,

If you look again I expanded my reply with " What you could do is divide your purchase price by the number of months you've owned the car for."

My commute is 80 miles each way (fortunately only 2 or 3 times per week). At that cost i'd be almost working for free on those days!

You're paying £2400 a year for insurance???!!! yikes

£5k a year in fuel?

Christ, just buy a more economical car and either move or pick something with a lower insurance group.

If you want something reliable and cheap, IMO your best bet is probably going to be to buy something mainstream at around three years old. If you're paranoid about reliability, buy a Kia which still has four years of warranty left. smile
This is exactly what I thought when I read the OP.

We have an Rio as the `Pool car` at work. Gets ragged to fk i imagine & has had no more than servicing, brakes & tyres & still drives great @ 80k & has a few months warranty left. Approx £6k would buy you the same model today with half the miles according to Autotrader & any money in the car when you get your house is yours too.

No brainer I`d say!

March.

Thing is, I opted to extend the lease twice on it already...I just couldn't be bothered to change it at the end of the previous agreements.

I think if it was still new it wouldn't bother me as much but all that expense on something with 55k that is visually tired, inside and out, is what's making it seem extortionate.

I was 32 when I first got it and having a new, expensive, big car mattered way more to me than it does now at nearly 36.

Indeed, thanks for engaging. Here’s to many more conversations. beer

As I bought the M6 on the 1st of the month, I kind of expect it’s the same as when I got it... so zero, on your rule.

As for the 760, here’s the equivalent models for sale on Autotrader:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-search?sort=spons...

Here’s mine in my Readers Car thread on it: https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

Please value (hypothetically speaking now) it against the car’s on AT & give me your figure, bearing in mind I paid <9k (just) last year.

In other words, approximating zero.

I’m not trying to be deliberately arsey, I recognise my mathematical skills aren’t the best, so I always double check any numbers or calculations I have to supply, (ever since I had to fill a Reefer container & worked the load based on the external dimensions - but that’s a different story! laugh) so the answer was based on the logic above, not pulled out of a hat.

£1250 all in per year. Not very PH’s but then again it’s not a very PH friendly car.

That'll teach me for not reading your post more thoroughly, I assumed you'd owned the car from new.

So, sorry!

'59 Focus RS Mk.2

Car - £500
Insurance - £700 (£59)
VED - £305 (£25)
Fuel - £70

So about £650 a month, not including servicing or depreciation. £7.85k a year, car payment will drop off after January though at least.
