Not a car but was working with two engineers testing the electronics and avionics, me and one chap in the cockpit and one in the avionics bay below on an old airliner yesterday, playing cockpit alarm noises on my phone made them jump a little biggrin

On your A45, surely at a steady 37 mph it just makes a normal exhaust noise ?

Just had a prime example of someone being "outraged" by our totally factory standard A45 going about its business....

Going from a 30mph zone to a 40mph zone and there was some old dose walking his dog along the footpath.

As i passed him doing a heady 37MPH in the 40MPH he stopped was shaking his head and mouthing something to me (no doubt about the "speed" and noise rolleyes). He then watched me as drove on down the road at under the speed limit, no doubt "outraged" and offended by the loud (factory standard) exhaust and how i clearly must have been speeding.....

Hopefully its ruined his afternoon hehe
Idiot!

I actually like the sound. It's nice to know manufacturers still have a slight silly streak and add these features to cars.

Much rather hear a popping A45 / RS3 etc. than nothing at all.

A few years ago the catalyst on my BMW e36 328i needed replacing.

On a budget I replaced it with a non BMW cheaper alternative. Just changing this part I had lots of loud pops/bangs on the over run once the car had warmed up.
Initially I thought that sounds a bit "sporty/race car", but the novelty soon wore off and it attracted attention. Much prefer the original OEM catalyst sound, but I am sure many PHers would like the popping noises.

There is probably a technical explanation as to why one part changed the whole exhaust system, but I was surprised.

For doing what exactly.....?

Driving a factory standard car and minding my own business at a safe speed well within the speed limit? I had absolutely no interaction with him at all yet he chose to be "outraged" by the car.

What makes me the "idiot" in that?

That's why.
Plus you thinking it's cool to have an obviously manufactured noise at such a low speed, unless your story is not as innocent as you make out!

Hoping his own outrage over nothing at all ruined his afternoon, yes.

I did nothing other than drive the car within the speed limit. It didnt pop or bang or fart. However to him at least, clearly a bright red hatchback on black rims and an exhaust note had to be speeding.

I was minding my own business. Sadly he couldnt mind his.

I dont think any banging or farting it might do is cool BTW. I quite like it, but i dont think its "cool". The car does what it does. We didnt modify it, its as per AMG Mercedes built it. We bought it for its ability, not for how its exhaust sounds.

I think the achievement there is 530BHP from a Golf, not the exhaust note.

You're kind of making this story up to suit your preferred narrative.

Saying "he couldn't mind his" (business) is a fiction - you didn't interact, from what you've said he shook his head. He's hardly interfering with your day, but it's obviously triggering something for you.

It does look a little like you want people to give you attention in the car and then become indignant when they don't give you the sort of attention you want. Or if gives you the chance to claim that they're tutting at you.

You're quite the bag of contradictions aren't you.

What's wrong with rims? I call them alloys, wheels, rims etc.

I think on a car enthusiast website; rims is a perfectly acceptable name for wheels.

This, TBH.

I've been in Indonesia where every tosser gets the exhaust 'opened' on their 125cc motorcycle. It's horrible and antisocial and it's only when you get to somewhere with regulation that you notice the difference and think 'thank god people don't have freedom to be tossers here'.

Sorry Stu, you've made the mistake lots of people do: assuming a place called Pistonheads is for motoring enthusiasts, rather than what it actually is, which is Mumsnet for blokes.

I, fortunately, am blessed with empathy, so can understand entirely the sort of gammon-faced Daily Mailer who mumbles under his breath any time a yoof dares disturb the tranquility around his beige bungalow by doing something as raucous as driving their car about the place and I share a smile with you at the thought of such a thing genuinely spoiling the old git's day.

Not at all. He stopped walking did the whole glaring and shaking his head, then (as I was able to see in my rear view mirror) he stood and watched as I drove on down the road.

And I'm not indignant, no. Bemused that's all. Had I been in the passat and doing the same speed he wouldn't have batted an eyelid.

And what about standard factory cars with no mods? Should they be banned too?

Perhaps he was shaking his head because he wanted one and his missus made him buy the a140, because road tax. biggrin

I was pottering through my old estate in the z4 at about 20 mph on the z4 and some old git was so outraged that he waved his stick at me and then shepherded the family away from the kerb with it.
1. They were on the pavement on other side of the road
2. The youngest was about 40.

On topic- my 8 speed auto farts. Turbo engine. Is it to do with keeping the turbo spinning?

That sounds so rubbish from the outside but the mp3 inside sounds ok.
