So, my new arrival is a nearly new Disco 4; I went to tell my insurance of change of vehicle (LV, who are very good to be fair) - and they've said, they will not insure it for theft or attempted theft, without a tracker fitted. Full stop.

I know that trackers can reduce insurance premiums, but never heard of an actual refusal to insure.

And so, my questions are: is this now a common thing? And secondly........ what's considered a good tracker, for a fair price?????

Any help much appreciated angel

Loads of keyless thefts on Disco 4's, hence why.

I would consider looking for another insurer, LV are great on cars they want to insure, but try elsewhere.

Funny, I’m insured with LV and have trackers fitted to our cars (Golf R hatch and Golf R estate), and it makes no difference to our premium at all!

I can't really see the benefit of a tracker, apart from to those who manufacture, install and control them.

Will having one installed reduce the risk of your car being targeted? No.

Will it cost you a lot more money? Yes.

Echo what been said of trying to find a different Insurer.

Personally I think trackers are simply insurance for the insurance company

It probably won't make a difference to the premium, just the fact they won't insure you without one.

However, most of the trackers are around £100/year so you have to factor that in as well.

They have been doing this for years on certain vehicles.

A lot of targeted thefts result in the cars being left out in the open for a few days in case of trackers - with one fitted the car is easily recovered at that point, hence reducing the insurer's losses.

Best ask the insurance company which ones they will accept. No point in DIY if they require an installation certificate of some sort.

Just choose a different insurer.

I have trackers on two Landrovers

its nice to check where my wife has parked, as she is good at going shopping for an hour and being missing for the day.

Tackit24/7 I would reccoment, self fit, tells you when it moves out of a preset area, or speeds etc. and you cal "arm" it remotely turning the car off ( I fancy a spike under the drivers seat)

It is fairly common for insurers to mandate location-trackers on supercars above ~£100k.

Lots of Land Rover vehicles getting stolen now, so probably very high risk (for some insurers).

Try Tracker.co.uk or Vodafone Automotive.

If you want / need the Thatcham-approved models, they will all charge an installation fee + annual ongoing remote-tracking fee.

It's made no difference to the OPs LV premium either. wink

i've got the standard fit one on the Range Rover, no fee for the first few years. Presumably i will have to pay a yearly fee after a few years.

I've got a trackstar one fitted on the i8, it is £799 to fit and £399 monitoring for the time you own the car, or £120/yr quite good, has geofencing so if the car moves (for example off the drive at night) you get an alert.

you can get them fitted for a couple of hundred quid for a cat 5, which are more than adequate.

My insurance company wanted a tracker when i bought my impreza 11 years ago

I think they are a bit of a waste of money as if the car is stolen i dont really want it back as who knows what damage has been done to it

It's a lot of extra ongoing outlay each year just for the remote possibility that your car may be stolen and left (with its tracker untouched) somewhere that the insurance company can locate and recover it.

If it's so important to the insurance companies, maybe they should all provide Tracker installation and operation as an included service within your premium, since it's only for their benefit? I bet they'd soon change their minds about it then!

When I tried to insure the 640d with my current insurer they said they wouldn't insure it without a tracker as well, I just cancelled my policy and went with another insurer that would insure it without a tracker.

Yes, but THEY may want it back. A stolen and recovered car is worth more to an insurance company than nothing if it turns up after they've paid your claim out. It's all about reducing their costs.

First came across this "mandatory tracker" thing when I worked in insurance, it was pretty much the only way you could insure an Escort or Sierra Cosworth back in the early 1990s so it's nothing new.

HMMM, thanks for all the feedback... it seems I'll just go for another insurer. A shame.

LV wanted one with my 640D initially. Not sure why they still do but LR products seem popular among the less honest side of this country...
