RE: BMW 640d M Sport Gran Coupe: Spotted
Discussion
First of all, do not try and compare the 4GC with the 6GC, these are chalk and cheese. The 6GC is a massive step up in build, comfort and quality.
It is however, a heavy and expensive car that does not appreciate being run on a budget. While the engine and gear box should prove reliable, the stress on other components is significant.
Also, I would be avoiding the diesel these days for obvious reasons.
A nice petrol on the other hand...

I spent 3 years in one very similar to the advert, and enjoyed it very much - however it was not the most reliable of cars and it was heavy on consumables. Great looking thing which attracted much very positive comment and it wasn't sporty really - too wafty for that - but it was superlative on DCs and the motorway.
A huge amount of car at that price - but remember that no-one ever paid anywhere close to the list - 25% discount was common, so pricing perhaps reflective of that.

However, the old E65 7 was Bangle's best effort and a magnificent characterful example of the proper brutish style of old school beemer which we have missed in latter years..
You're entitled to your opinion however the sales figures would suggest you're in the minority - the F series (118,626 total sales) has in 6 years outsold the E series (116,748 total sales) which was on sale for 7 years...Helicopter123 said:

I fancy one of these as my next car, my uncle had a 6 series coupe and I had a little go and that was lovely to drive. Not the most sporty thing, but for mile munching it was lovely. If I had one it would have to have comfort seats though.
I've just looked up the 6GT on BMW's website, and eughhh what were they thinking! If the roofline was lower I could understand but it looked horrible!

Always admired these and am seriously tempted at this price. Only thing that puts me off is you can't fit roof bars or a tow bar. I know it's not meant to be an MPV but I need to be able to move my bike around with my kids in the car.
Has anyone been able to fit a tow bar?
They are not type approved from memory for tow bars. Has anyone been able to fit a tow bar?
The only real solution is one of the boot rack types if you can get one suitable.
Do not expect decent MPG if you are pressing on, but it is nice to be able to cruise and decent MPG orr going more quickly and slightly lower MPG

I recall the boot racks not being suitable as the boot is some kind of carbon/plastic compound The only real solution is one of the boot rack types if you can get one suitable.

Appears you were right on the strength point (the boot lids on all 6 are composite), the only other possible solution is the sea suckerhttps://www.seasucker.com/

The ride is no better (worse imo) than a 5 series, nor is it as practical, and with the majority of them being 640d's, the performance is rather underwhelming. The 6 should be a more luxurious 5, and a sportier 7, but fails to do both. Having been the passenger in the rear of one for a couple of long journeys I can also confirm they're not comfortable at all due to the sloping rear headline and hard seats.
Like most did, i'd save my money and buy a nicely specced 5 or lay out a little more and buy a glorious 7 series. Having said that at £22k they make a lot more sense and are quite the steal!
As a daily driver I find my 640's performance completely fine and totally unusable as it is. Flipside in cruise mode it gets decent MPG to boot which any of the other 6 range would not. Equally it does not sound bad to my ears among the hum of other 4 pots and less...Like most did, i'd save my money and buy a nicely specced 5 or lay out a little more and buy a glorious 7 series. The 6 really is more luxurious, it just depends how you define that and these days it tends to be defined by what features and tech come as standard.
IMO the 6 is not made for rear adult sized people at all in any form. Most of the time my rear seats get used it is for carrying small people around like my niece and nephews. In regards to headroom the same problem exists for the competitor cars of the period in the CLS and A7 really.
In all my years, I have never owned a German car, but apart from the occasional urges to get a Boxster S/Cayman S / 911, I've never been interested in them for their ubiquity and also their lack of style.
However, I have had a soft spot for this car for some time, and have been looking at the classifieds for about 6 months. A 3 year old 640D can be obtained for c.£30k - and that is very tempting indeed. Some nice colours about too - inside and out. The metallic red is especially appealing to my eyes.
A point to note - I love cycling, so the bike rack issue is relevant to me. The back seats fold down on the Gran Coupe. The 2 door coupé does not have this option, to my knowledge. So you can get a bike in a Gran Coupé but not the 2 door version.
This car is by some margin my favourite BMW.
