The proof will be in the group test when it goes up against it's rivals until then we won't know if it's good or not I'm guessing from the review it won't be as good a steer as the Renault/Peugeot/Ford but will counter with the interior & of course the badge.

By the way where's Polo Joe he must be having a wet dream over this.

I must admit, i do miss the constant self-justification for his purchase and the insistent comparison towards the Fiesta ST.

I agree, the forum needs a good injection of Polo lovin' to keep us going.

Though I'd say he'd probably not be keen on this one as it might make his justification issues worse, it's "better" than the old one, therefore in his eyes, worse.

Either way, the mental gymnastics would've been fun to watch.

For me the Polo is less interesting than even my Volvo although I'm sure it would be more fun to drive than my 15 year old workhorse.

Do you have a Polo?

The article states that there hasn't been a good polo GTI for 30 years.

I was under the impression that the most recent GTI was well received, especially the facelift which I believe has the e-diff from the Golf.

I miss him greatly now, come back Polo Joe! That time he dug up a glowing review of his car from some obscure South African car site. Those were the days...

Wonder why they gave it the old 6 speed DSG 'box rather than the 7 speed 'box you get in the current Golf GTI.
You've probably answered your own question, it's in their interest to keep the Golf "better"

Looks good and keenly priced too which I wasn't expecting!
Am i missing something here??

£19,995 for the basic car, then say £500 for metallic paint, add a few choice extras and you'll be knocking the door of £23,000.

Cant see them being too givey with discounts initially either.....
Maybe I'm missing the bigger a picture but a quick check puts Renault Sport Clio at 20k and 208 Gti at 23k. They have a smidge more power but this is a brand new car with a more desirable 2.0 engine and likely a much nicer interior. Factor in the more premium brand perception and it doesn't seem steep to me.
But according to VW's own website a Polo 1.0 Tsi 115ps SEL DSG starts at £19,530

So PH (and Autocar) are leading us down the garden path to suggest this will be a £20,000 car

No chance, £22,000 as a minimum I'd guess...

Are you serious PH??? Take a look at that interior, the wheels and the front bumper and grill, looks far more lairer than a Fiesta ST. The st you guys spout out at times is unbelievable.
Well I meant from a driving perspective, sorry if that wasn't clear!

From what i remember, he had to have the best possible version of that particular model. I can just imagine his comments right about now laugh

To also answer the question asked on this thread, about how they are on track; all we need to know is if the turbo can last over 5000 miles before going pop biggrin

So we know, in some detail, what it’s like on a track where no one will ever ever drive it.

What’s it like on the road? Is it quiet, comfortable, what’s the ride like? The things that matter.

No idea beyond a single short sentence. Guess we’ll have to wait for a proper review from a real car magazine...
Great, thanks for that.

To be honest with you the road route wasn't all that revealing, hence a greater focus on the track stuff. We'll obviously hope to conduct a more thorough test on UK roads in 2018, probably at about the same time the proper magazines do their tests in fact. Hope you enjoy them.

To be fair though the MK5 Polo GTI had the DQ200 7-speed DSG 'box which can handle far less torque than the DQ250 6-speed that the new one has. The GTI and R now have the DQ380 7-speed 'box.

that's some engine the polo is getting, if ko4 equipped then be easy to get 360hp+ from the only down side is the weight, seems a tad heavy for the polo sure the mk7 golf isn't much heavier

A friend just bought a MK7.5 GTI with 6k miles for 25 so even if this nudges 22 brand new, still quite a lot cheaper.

Then again the majority will lease them and unless the monthlies are a lot cheaper, some people will just go for the Golf for an extra.....50-80 quid a month?

Isn't it essentially a re-skinned Golf GTI mark V?

-Same power
-Same weight
-Same performance
-Same dimensions
-Exactly what I was thinking - same price too
