Surely everyone knows that HUD came from aircraft?

Do PH staff think that everyone here is a thicko?

HUDs were first developed, like the origin of much automotive technology, for aircraft.
I guess that you didn't understand what I was saying.

Your statements are mooted by the article. However, if you intended some alternative or ironic meaning, by all means, I would be among those interested to hear a full explanation.

Indeed. Doesn't seem too difficult to comprehend.

I can see the benefits of HUD but I’m put off by the exorbitant cost of replacing the windscreen. I seem to get through a screen most years.

I followed this one for a while but unfortunately it looks like they are no more frown

Drave a 1990 or 91 Pontiac GTP with the HUD and it worked OK but seemed to add nothing really. But now when you can show speed limits etc the uses seem far greater, drove a Mazda 3 with a mock system the other day and really liked having the speed shown on the limit crazy Swiss roads.

As an aside I always thought Europe was the place for techno - but when you look at it so much is first mass produced in the US - like HUD and Headlight on Twilight Sentinel. We may sometimes mock US cars but they are cheap and packed with gizmos sometimes decades before they become common over the pond! Fair do's I say!

a mate of mine had a "HUD" rev counter in the 1970's on his rally mini -
it was by mounting a spare rev counter on the steering column pointing up onto the screen with brighter than standard lights.
only issue was everything was reversed

Reddit here has a thread that casts light on their demise. Pity.

Still a nascent category, so I reckon there'll be more to come, from other brands.

I didn't realise Merc and Audi were so late adding these on, thought they'd been offered for at least a decade! Nice idea but shame that even on a top spec car it's usually relegated to the options list.

Aren't HUDs for cars a bit pointless. Yes in a combat aircraft they display essential data onto screen / visor when you bend your neck but in car you can actually see how fast you're going never mind the speedo, and hear the revs never mind the tacho. If that's too difficult you should be on the bus, at the back. If they were any good for racing they would be in F1, and for safety the po-po would use them. Gadget for gadgeteers I say.

Perfect for the classic car enthusiast - anyone know of a good quality unit that runs on batteries [prefer to to hard wire in my classic]

Only in the way that, say, smart phones are a bit pointless. A feature phone from 20 years ago will do just fine. Even better: let's restrict ourselves to the landline at home.

HUD in aircraft are designed to get the pilot's head out of the cockpit, chiefly, but not only, for reasons of navigation and situational awareness -- things for which the Formula 1 driver -- on a closed course -- has an entire team of specialists and a real-time voice link. The "jobs" to be done during the race are not all being done by the driver.

This is the exact opposite for road drivers, where there is no team over which to apportion the labour. HUD in a road car is not unlike HUD in an aircraft. And the revs and speed which you cite are not the greatest value bits delivered.

I could do with one of these on my car screen as my main units on my speedometer are in KPH
Do they still show up okay on the screen in the sunshine?

Can't say it was that useful, just faded into the background and ignored.
I had HUD on my 2000 C5 convertible. I liked the feature, although it was rendered pretty much invisible when I wore polarized sunglasses.

I had a BMW 635D for a while. It had a head up display, and before I used it, I thought it was going to be a bit of a gimmick.

After a few months, I came to really appreciate it. It works well, and displayed a useful and appropriate amount of info. I really rated the BMW system. I can't speak for other systems, though.
