Why is it 174 with the limiter raised? Why can the Alfa do 190+ but not Mercedes/BMW/Audi. Never made sense to me, you can buy a S65 AMG for 180 grand with a 155 limited top speed! Why is it always the Germans that limit the top speeds!
I understood it was a gentlemans agreement between the main German manufacturers for some reason.

Now comes with Hancook tyres. So that's another £1k you need to budget for some decent rubber.
Rubbish. I've had Hankooks on several cars and rate them highly.

They're not crap budget tyres.

Merc are putting them on lots of their cars now too.

Why are the photo's so enigmatic?
What is it with PH articles only ever including tiny compressed versions of the photos and never hi-res?

Anyway, I am liking what I see with this new RS4 but if their is a new RS6 also on the horizon is the 4 going to take the mid-range hit thats been happening more and more over the last few years? Seems like the S and RS4 both been forgotten about for quite a while now. With it being so easy to get into the Golf R/S3/M140i/A45 level cars, them also having more than enough capabilities for anyone to need and those who can afford it going straight to the top with RS6/C63 etc level the 4 just seemed to get a bit neglected, possibly pointless.

This was my point when the RS5 was launched. They've chosen to give a brand new car less power than it's older competitors.
I’m not saying you two are complaining about the car being under powered but in the M5 comments section, everybody was saying it has ‘too much’ power and can never be used on a day to day basis.

Audi are literally producing cars with less power and are focusing on the usable power and dynamics of the car.

If any car should have less power, it’s the hot hatchbacks...well the super hatchbacks! 400bhp from an RS3 with the same 0-60 figure as it’s bigger brother!

BMW are smart not engaging the A45 and RS3 in the horsepower war with the M2! It’s left a respectable gap between it and the M4.

A poster here mentions the RS3 being better than the RS4 because of the cheaper price, more exiting engine and small difference in performance. Not a good thing.

Basically, people will always moan
I've never said the M5 is too powerful, quite the opposite.

Leave the tree-huggers to their lentils & Prius. This RS4 has gone from the daddy of the power stakes to the runt. Shame.

Am seriously tempted to dip a toe in to Audi ownership with one of these.

I always get the impression that RS cars end up being more enjoyable longer term ownership prospects versus how they are reported based on short term launch/road test exposure.

Not if my friends B7 was anything to go by! He had it for 7 years and did 120k miles in it (!!) but had loads of problems. Was on its 3rd set of shocks, new power steering pump and rack, corroded pipes for the air con, new wiper blade motor, new intake manifold, and some other bits too. It was not a cheap car to run! He fell out of love with it as it just kept going wrong.

Not sure what happened to it but I assume it's now dead, checked MOT database for HJ57 GXY and it's not got an MOT now.

Me too, although slightly concerned if DRC issues surface again. Now I know this is Pistonheads but talk of underpowered, runt of the litter let's get real, seriously how do you need more power on British roads these days ?

Anyway, why stop at the Audi? You could buy 12 Golf Rs for the cost of a new Rolls Royce Phantom. In fact, you could perhaps somehow how connect all of the Golfs into some kind of mega Golf - 3,600bhp and seats for all your friends. And just imagine if you could map it!
A Mega Golf biglaugh Now this is something I would like to see. Slammed on its arches and including all 48 tailpipes.

'Worth' is personal, subjective.

What you're really saying is you can't afford an RS4, which is fine. But you can't determine worth of anything without experiencing it first.

Just from the pictures, you can tell the RS4 will be a much nicer place to sit than the Golf. It also has 200mm extra wheel base, so clearly a nicer experience for passengers. Perhaps most importantly for us though, it has a more powerful engine than the Golf, and will sound better too. Yep, you could remap the Golf, but it won't make it sound like a six cylinder. You've also just teared up your warranty for the privilege.

I've had RS5's, m3's, etc but at the time the golf r32/r was relatively crap - I believe the current R has bridged the gap so much that the Audi looks bad value for money

the interior does look a little nicer and the engine will sound nicer, can't disagree with that

tyre pressure gauge (how does a 60k car not have this???)
Even the wifes cactus has one of those. Are Audi taking the piss?
Yes!
Not *entirely*...

Audi's have always had a pretty poor rotation-based TPMS (because that's now a legal requirement, AFAIK). No absolute pressure readings, no sensors in the valves.

The RS4 system seems to uses valve sensors that measure temperature as well as pressure, which is definitely a neat gimmick. (and more useful then differently coloured brake calipers, for example). If you don't tick the option you just get the basic system...
According to my MOT testing friend Andrew, all new cars had to be fitted with TPMS from the 1st of November 2014 and if they don't work it's an MOT fail. Is this correct or does it only affect models introduced after that date?

As above, a rolling circumference based system counts as a "TPMS" even though it doesn't actually monitor the tyre pressure. It actually seems to work adequately on our Skoda and it's a nice simple system. Of course it doesn't work when the car is stationary.

Why is the Giulia apparently RS5, rather than this car’s, competition?
...er....dunno? Because they don't want the RS4 to lose to a young upstart? wink
RS4 : estate only
RS5 :2dr (and soon 4dr) coupe
Giulia : 4dr saloon only

4dr coupe vs 4 door saloon seems perfectly sensible. RS4 and RS5 are pretty much identical under the skin.

I think it looks great in green with the gloss black trim pack, just a pity Audi insist on not equipping their cars an organ style accelerator pedal.

I've driven and really like the S4 / SQ5 versions. I think the RS4 has the same engine as those 2 which isn't a bad thing as they do go very nicely.

What I don't get though is the single clutch gearbox. I had thought that S-Tronic / Dual Clutch was the new way to go with performance cars, Golf R, S3, RS3 all has them and they're fantastic but all these S and RS cars on the A4 and up seem to be going with single clutch. Does anyone know why?

Someone else has mentioned value for money and it isn't really there for me either.

For example, on something like a Golf R you get as standard, Nav, Heated Seats, Folding Heated Mirrors, Adaptive Cruise, plus basic stuff like storage pockets etc.. On an Audi S4 you have to pay extra for folding mirrors, more on top for heated folding mirrors. You don't get any storage as standard, that'll cost you. If you want Adaptive Cruise that will cost you. I know if you're buying a car like this money shouldn't really be an issue but it's still a bit rubbish to have to spec all those things extra that you get as standard on a lesser car!
