I'm not sure why, but this iteration of the RS6 has never really done much for me. Maybe i just prefer the RS4 and the newer RS6 shape, but the styling on these just doesn't look right to me. I'm sure it's a blast to drive, especially with that power-train. I just know i wouldn't really ever buy one.

One thing that may potentially cause issues from a daily driving point of view is parts availability, something that Audi is pretty shonky with for cars over 10 years old
Not sure where you got that info from...my S8 is now 15 years old and never had any issues getting parts for it so far thumbup
Personal experience with a 17 year old RS4. Quite a number of parts now NLA

Good to hear, and hopefully it stays that way

I believe RS2 owners have suffered from this for a good while now too though

RS2’s are what 1994/95 so 22/23 years old.

The C5 RS6 is a 52 reg car so 7-8 years newer plus built in higher quantity.

These do cost a lot to run and things can go wrong
E55Ks cost a lot to run and things can go wrong
E60 M5 cost a lot to run and things can go wrong
For all of those not a single one is showing the faintest hint of going up in value - why is that? I guess the older versions of them have also shown weak performance too.

True re age of the RS2 but by all accounts it's been an issue for quite a while. I remember hearing worries about it over a decade ago. And they did build quite a few of them (nearly 3000 IIRC), so I don't think that's an excuse

Wrt B5 RS4, I got hit with an NLA issue last year that Audi could do nothing about, where a casing connecting to the rear diff failed and the car was stranded for a month until I managed to source a secondhand one from a breakers. This wasn't even RS4-specific and was common for all quattro B5s (although the one I got did come from another RS4)

Don't want to go too OT, as it doesn't sound like the C5 RS6 is affected. However, I never had the same parts availability issues with various older BMWs (E30s, E34 M5, etc)

I know that's the quoted figure, but I have to confess they never FEEL that fast.

C7 DOES feel fast though! biggrin

They certainly do and are.

Even in non sport ie starting in 2nd Gear it will do it. In Sport it’s a madman.

This particular C5 RS6 is a lovely example. But would it be worth spending the extra on a C6? They can throw up rectal prolapse bills as well can't they? This RS6 looks like you just buy it and enjoy it. And keep it properly maintained...
Not sure what I want really, am torn between one of these, an XJR, XKR (both 4.2 guise).

Interesting point. I owned a stage 1 a few years before 'cheap' (all relative!) C5 ownership became an option. Was quite new and tight - just in warranty. It was quick - but like you say it never felt that quick. I think it was all just so comfy you were divorced slightly from the experience. Anyway IMO a tuned C5s true strength is the laugh-out-loud torque available for third gear overtaking. Just amazing. I don't know how it did it... I currently own a tuned E63 with 750 ftlbs and that thing pulls like a train but just with 550 ftlbs the RS6 was more of an event.

I don't know so, but I think part of it is that the TCU & ECU manage the torque to (biglaugh try and ) look after the gearbox. So they feel a little more linear. From a 5mph rolling start they can feel blistering quick. Also midrange, 2200 rpm in 2nd or 3rd with no kickdown, so there's no spool time or box lag - they feel epic. But you're right, there are some spots where I think "come on" - but 3.9s later I'm thinking "Woah there Lassie".

Well played.
You will never regret having a C5 RS6 Avant in your lifetime of owning cars.

I’m so glad I owned one very fond memories.
