I would agree with “anything old and American”, and I love all the old school Brit stuff...but boy....I really love an AMG!!!

Overall though...surely the Yanks have to take this one? If purely on the audible aspects??

I heard -and felt- this start 3 blocks away.

Hot August nights in Reno is awesome.

AM V8 Vantage.

Not obvious, not overbearing but bristling with intent and just glorious above 4K.

I think the maserati granturismo V8 is one of the best sounding engines ever

And the ferrari 458/430/488 are some of the worst V8 sounds ever, it's just a noise. Not unpleasant but they could do way more with it I think despite being flat plane they are so unmusical

Of all the V8’s i’ve owned, I would say:

1. Passat W8 (technically not a v, but by far the best sounding 8 pot I’ve owned)
2. Brabus K8
3. Merc C43 AMG
4. Alpina B10 V8S

Ford GT40 opening up out of a hairpin. Best engine note I've ever heard.

This I find as very special.
So much power
So light
So great sounding
So successful
So very pretty

Perfection? Possibly.

488 GTB is pretty good too.
Though a 458 speciale or 328 Competitione probably pips it.

Most of the N/A AMG V8's my old SL63 had a wonderful natural sound not enhanced or farty like a lot of cars today. Pops and bangs on the overrun were real.

There are different tools for different jobs. The American way of doing things has its sound, the European way has another.

The big block Chevy lump in my previous race car was quite popular with fans for its noise (95% nitromethane helps):

The nostalgia motors with smaller fuel pumps have a more delicate, precise sound than the big show fuel cars that are sensory overload. 160db or thereabouts is quite a lot for a pushrod V8. As it was once described to me, few things sound as good as a sharply tuned rat motor (rat vs mouse, BBC vs SBC etc).

On the European front, the DFV was special, it made an organic, mechanical noise that modern engines just cant. Road going equivalent I'd go for the F355 with a Capristo system.
