...i'm shocked that virtually every quote on the comparison sites are black box only.
....
Can anybody recommend of any insurance companies that insure 17yr olds without telematics at reasonable prices compared to that of a black box?
Look at it from the insurer's point of view.....

You have two 17yos looking for quotes.
One is quite happy to accept a black box.
The other is adamant they do not want a black box.
Would YOU regard them as equal risk...?

As a parent I want him safe and I understand that's the reasons behind the point of a black box...
It's not just about HIM being safe. It's about all those sharing a road with him. They're the ones that'll cost an insurer a hell of a lot if he cocks it up.kavanagh said:
Hi all
2010 1.2 Ford Ka Zetec Fully Comp £1100
2005 1.6 Honda Sport Fully Comp £1650
2009 1.8 Vauxhall Vectra Sri Fully Comp £1650

Id rip the hand off the insurer giving those prices. I paid £2500 with LV for my first year, on a 15 year old polo (no black box).2010 1.2 Ford Ka Zetec Fully Comp £1100

Insurance companies have your pants down first year of driving, I think you just have to bite the bullet and realise it's going to be a big dent in the pocket.
Looking back as much as I didn't want a black box at the time, in my situation I was probably better off with one. My car wasnt really fast enough to actually take advantage of not having a box fitted. Doors uses to shake when I got to 50mph lol.
I agree, I think those quotes are fantastic.
Where are they from out of interest and do you live in the Isle of Wight, garaged car etc?
I got laughed at trying to insure my son for anything larger than a 1.4, nice area, garage. I tried all the specialists as well as the go compare lot.
A 1.6 Honda SUV came in at £5800. I gave up after two days and insured a Polo for £2400. Even that was struggle.
er where's the original post gone?

I think it's the other way around. My mates son has just cost his insurer £45K, the bloody idiot. Sounds fair to me.
Best quotes I found were with Admiral on their Multi car policy.
What was interesting was that an 2005 VW Polo in Automatic guise was £2500 and an identical manual version was £2000.
Apparently more automatic cars are damaged by learner or new drivers than manuals. I was expecting it to be the other way round.

Brilliant idea it should become compulsory for the first couple of years for new drivers of any age. It not only brings the cost of the insurance down by quite a substantial amount it is also an incentive to keep the drivers within the speed limits. There are different boxes, my sons is purely based on speed so no penalties for night curfews, hard breaking, fast cornering or going over speed bumps to fast.

Many people who do auto-only tests do so because they simply can't cope with gears and clutch. I'd imagine they're not low-risk once they're let loose.Apparently more automatic cars are damaged by learner or new drivers than manuals. I was expecting it to be the other way round.

A friends 18yo daughter is learning to drive and is looking to buy a Citroen C1 or Peugeot 107, with a full licence she has been quoted £830 with a black box, remove the box and it jumps up to just over £1200
My 17 yr old son was insured this time last year on his C1 for £380 until he passed his test and then a further £700 after , no black box , we have just renewed for £680 again no black box and cheaper than any black box option (We would pay extra NOT to have a black box) Just need to shop around , a lot
I amazed at how much some "parents" pay but then some of his friends have year old Minis as their first cars and then you NEED to go FC instead of TPFT
That's a good price.Stats play a huge part in all this. Maybe a C1 hasn't had many claims against it.
It would be really useful to have the stats and a guide price printed somewhere, to save ringing up all the time asking for different quotes.
I tried to get my son quoted on an automatic 1990's 1.6 Merc c class, value £250. Quote was £8000.
Admiral told me their Phone quotes were usually cheaper than their online ones.

Hi liner - would you mind sharing who you got that policy through?
First one was Halifax but their renewal was like £1500 so we went to Endsleigh on renewal, both were through Confused.com We also had to play with the policy a little, it was cheaper this year just to have his mum as a named driver and take me off , last year it made no difference so we were both on it
The problem is I dont think anyone can really say that A is the cheapest provider , the market moves very quickly so there is no alternative to shopping around as much as you can
reading threads like this makes me realise how much these things vary.
Oldest daughter paid £600 for her first years insurance. This was at 19 but 6 months after she had a fault claim (wrote of my car running into the back of someone). That was with Admiral (who are the ones that had to pay up when she wrote my car off), fully comp, on a 2005 Fiat Punto. All done by a confused.com quote.
I think she could have saved about £30 by having a black box......
btw. contrast that with my first car: In about 1984 I paid £400 a year for TPFT on a knackered old dolomite. According to thisismoney.co.uk that is over £1200 in todays money.

Some of these quotes are crazy cheap ... I pay £600 on my Q7, 6yrs no claims, 10+yr license + ADI, 35yrs old
It’s only in the past c.4yrs my annuals have been in 3figures!
Appreciate the difference in vehicle etc... but one of my first cars in 2001 (Ford Ka 1.3), was over £4k and my actual first in 2000 (SJ410) was £3.8k ... I’m shocked at the cheapness here!
