Does it still work to choose an unusual car, something for which few accident statistics exist? It used to be the case.

Brilliant idea it should become compulsory for the first couple of years for new drivers of any age. It not only brings the cost of the insurance down by quite a substantial amount it is also an incentive to keep the drivers within the speed limits. There are different boxes, my sons is purely based on speed so no penalties for night curfews, hard breaking, fast cornering or going over speed bumps to fast.
Why not just make it compulsory for everyone then why 'pick' on new drivers ?
Admiral tried the black box approx for my daughters 2nd years insurance after 1 year with no issues, what a load of junk, the power source was a badly balanced blob plugged into the cig lighter which kept falling out on a new Ford Ka, they had no alternative type.
It was sent back before I threw it through the window.

WTF ?

Second thread to do this today !...from 2 different posters
Perhaps the first to reply should always quote the OP so that those who come along later know what the question/point was. In this instance the first answer was an entirely valid point about black boxes and risk.

Because it isn't free to supply/install/monitor, and because experienced drivers have a track record to demonstrate risk.

How "strict" are these boxes then? What if you were doing 80-85mph on the motorway for a while, what happens- warnings, instant death, another £1000 to pay???

Can anybody recommend of any insurance companies that insure 17yr olds without telematics at reasonable prices compared to that of a black box?
Id rip the hand off the insurer giving those prices. I paid £2500 with LV for my first year, on a 15 year old polo (no black box).

Insurance companies have your pants down first year of driving, I think you just have to bite the bullet and realise it's going to be a big dent in the pocket.

Looking back as much as I didn't want a black box at the time, in my situation I was probably better off with one. My car wasnt really fast enough to actually take advantage of not having a box fitted. Doors uses to shake when I got to 50mph lol.
Same here, especially when I first passed. I was quoted £11,000+ on a Renault Megane 1.6 when I first passed in January 2016, even when I did quotes on 1.0-1.4 litre cars I was getting prices of £3500-£4000+.

Recently I've started looking again and they've dropped massively to £1000-£1300. This is with black box, without it, its just too, too expensive for me.

£2500 for a £1100 1.6 Focus, £2900 for a £500 Focus ST170. So overall the ST170 actually cost less to get on the road than a 1.6. What a joke biggrin

Some of the quotes I get are so bizzare, I'm sure someone will be along to explain in a little more detail.

£1300ishh on a 1.0 Yaris, and I've just got a quote on a 1.6 Mini One (2003) for £1069.00 fully comp with £350 excess.

Insurance on my first car at 17 last year was pretty cheap tbh...

Circa £1000 for a 13 plate fiesta 1.25 - main driver, no black box

For a 17 year old????

In 1995, at 20 years old, 2 years after passing my test - I paid £800 TPFT (the equivalent of over £1400 in today's money) on a 10 year old Ford Fiesta 1.1L

I thought insurance premiums were supposed to be more expensive these days?

For new drivers, black box = great idea!

Lots of kids these days actually want to know how well they are driving....black boxes help make them aware they are in driving a lethal weapon, and to learn carefully.
Of course, i would NEVER want one....but then I'm a dinosaur!!

I think people have to bear in mind, even if it's an old banger for £200, and they want £3000 to insure it, the big risk to an insurance company is to personal injury claims, the old car is neither here and there.

If your inexperienced 17yr old hits a pedestrian, and they have to have very serious surgery it could cost their insurance over £100,000 or more.

Dinosaurs are exactly the demographic that need these devices ?
You will (or should be aware) that as you get older your reflexes slow down making you more accident prone ?

I was just thinking to myself how Tiff Needell should be banned from driving until he gets a black box on his car.

That's why insurance is so expensive for older people?...no wait that's not right.

Insurance is statistics based, so if you want to know who is causing the most most accidents then you need to look at who is paying the most.
