My dad has an XF... he’s 62.
I am mid 50's and was going to get an XF.
But decided to stick with Mercedes.

JLR are too pipe and slippers for me at present.
Sums it all up nicely - when someone decides to buy a Mercedes because a Jag is too pipe and slippers! laugh

I'm late 50s and to me a Jaguar was always a straight 6 with a manual gearbox - MKII, S-Type or E-Type!

But by the time I passed my test in 1976 Jags were all super-comfy wafty barges with an auto gearbox - thinking XJ6s, XJ12s and XJSs.

What teenager would want one of those?banghead

And what do they make now - XE only has a manual gearbox if you buy one with a tractor engine, which is probably better suited to an auto anyway!

Or an F-Type, but a manual gearbox is only available with the sixes not the V8.

Still pipe and slippers - I prefer BMW for RWD fun with a manual 6-pot! laugh

Maybe in a few years time I will have a Jaguar/Mercedes show-down. rolleyes

I think ANY saloon car is going to be seen as an old mans car regardless of the brand it is from expeciallu by the under 30s. If you look at the demographics of say 3 series owners vs 4 series owners I think you would see an age difference.

The key to Jaguar really lowering its average age in the next couple of years would for me be the introduction of an XE coupe and convertible and an XF coupe and convertible. This will do more than anything to lower the age or the current range as SUVs are generally family wagons. The other way they could do it is with a smaller sports car to sit under the F type. A Jaguar version of an MX5 type car with a straight 6 and a manual? Sell in buckets to younger people.

I'm 55 in April and will hopefully be purchasing fun and comfortable. If people either think I'm going through a midlife crisis or getting old I really couldn't care less.

Had a Jag XJ8 for two years when I was approaching 50. The most comfortable car I have ever owned and loved every minute of ownership.

Still under 30 here- and still enjoying 420bhp, RWD, stunning looks and cheap insurance biglaugh

Car gets more compliments overall, whereas my previous Impreza STi’s only got them from the “that looks wikkiid fam, have you reeemapped it bro?” Crowd.
I still get the same comments from those- just more from other people now too haha!

I treated myself to an XJ6 similar to this in my early 30's:

25 odd years later on I now have this:

There's been three more XJ6s and XJ8s between these two.

I'll have a quick flick through Autotrader when it's time for a change but seriously considering buying anything else instead never really crosses my mind.

That might not work for everybody but the XJ subtle mix of performance and comfort and understated non confrontational styling does for me.

This will change the Old Fossils perception in more than one way.

The problem with Jags, rightly or wrongly, is also the image you present to others. At the moment if you are interested in credibility of any kind with people who don't drive Jags they are best avoided. Almost socially unacceptable around here I'm afraid (Manchester BYA).
That's one of the saddest posts I've read on here - I want to punch you over the internet.

I've not long turned 23 and currently looking for an S-Type R. Finding a tidy one is a little difficult so I may still end up with a more "old man" model, but still. A lot of car available for the money.

I have an MG ZT saloon at the moment which gets viewed as an old mans car by people my age too. At least it's not a 75!!

I quite like getting unconventional cars for my age group. Smart Roadster, MR2, ZT, (hopefully) Jag, or something equally old-man-ish - I'd take something a little different to most friends' wheezy base spec hatchbacks.

When it’s was in my 20s saloons were the most affordable way to procure a big V8 or similar. And as you say they were a lot more fun than a little hatchback.

Something like the SC XF is a cracking opportunity in your 20s.

What is it then? A 75 with a few plastic Halfords style “sporty” bits stuck on no?

Bought my XFR when i was 35 and couldn't be happier.
Nothing pipe and slippers about an obnoxious snarling V8 and sub 5 sec 0-60 times.

Hey, I have a 75! I'm only a couple of years older but like you, enjoy the unconventional cars for my age thing. The 75 Tourer is a work hack/motorway muncher, full old man spec though with beige cloth seats, walnut dash and BRG paintwork. As you say, most our age group have some generic eurohatch, it's nice to roll in something different.

Growing up in the 70s and 80s, I was fairly indifferent to Jaguars, although I guess I appreciated their reputation as being fine handling and fast large saloons / coupes.

Anyway, fast forward to ten years or so ago, and when the wife decided to shop around for a new car, completely out of the blue, she plumped for a three year old (at the time) S-Type V8. It suddenly dawned on me what an excellent car it was, despite the 'Marmite' looks. The handling was fantastic, and it had a sublime ride that far exceeded any comparative German cars at the time. And funnily enough, after years of German, French and yes, even Japanese cars, we ran a car for three years where nothing went wrong hehe

I caught the bug and bought a mint X-Type 3.0 manual as a daily driver, again giving me no trouble over three years and 30k miles. It was especially good in the harsh winters a few years ago.

Today, the other half has had her XF 5.0 for the last 5 years and she doesn't want to get rid. Whereas I have an XKR as a weekend toy.

Neither car has had any comments towards them other than complimentary, especially the XKR. At 45, I'm one of the older blokes at work, but even the young thrusters think it's a beautiful car biggrin

But then, I'm not really bothered what people think. Life is too short

Exactly that - Which makes it less old man than a 75 with a walnut dash and even more wallowy suspension hehe

I'm not sure that current Jags are old mens cars, the older ones are for sure , I'm an old man (49) and drive a 6 yr old XF but can't see anything in the Jag lineup that I would be interested in buying they have relied too much on diesels , in fact I think Jag are going to be in real trouble and might not even be around in 5 years

There are so many different Jaguars, an F Type R is so far removed from that 2001 Gold pensioner spec S type as it is from the XK120 compared to an X type.

XJ's are generally the coolest, especially and XJR in black, Hannibal Lecter had one.

Even down to the model, colour and trim levels make a huge difference.

The Arthur Daley thing has faded but a mustard Yellow early 80s one is now cool in an ironic way, the perception shifts as they become rarer.

I dont think E Types are that fantastic, they are generally totally over prepared, they were cool in the seventies when you would see the odd down at heel one, or when they were current and people just drove and kicked the crap out of them, most now look like a "Happy 60th Dad" or Fathers Day card picture, they look better with a bit of patina, the odd battlescar and evidence of use rather than evidence of an 80k refurb to better than it came from the factory.

Coolest Jag ever was this one,
