Very interesting evening. Transpires a white Lexus pulled up down the road from my house last night and 3 hooded scrotes scoped out my Golf R, neighbour caught it on his CCTV. Neighbour then went though his old files and this is their second visit and they were here 3 weeks ago. I'm at the end of a cul-de-sac so cars don't pass very often or without purpose.

Looks like they were spooked last night and left in a hurry after one took a phonecall, so could be they were planning to take it last night.

It's now blocked in by my wife's car on the drive and our front gate has a D-Lock through it and we've not fed the dog tonight. wink Not sure what else I can do.

Only 6 weeks left on the lease, so I'll probably try and dump it asap, with 2 young kids in the house i can do without the grief. Will an E39 540i be a moneypit?

I find it amazing how these cars attract such attention. I'd be looking to get rid ASAP - perhaps leave it elsewhere or see if they can take it back early. No car is worth the hassle of a gang threatening your family. Get an old E39 M5 instead!

Part of me wants to say leave it on the road and let them have it. The last thing you want is the fkers coming in for the keys if you’ve got a young family. The only way to stop them entirely is park it elsewhere for a while

That's scary, if you were hanging on to the car I'd get a steering lock

That's worrying.

How are Golf Rs being stolen these days? Is it usually a smash and grab for the keys through the front door?

OP, you've got the right idea. Sack off the thief-magnet Golf R, and get a proper car, like this beauty:

Things you need in your life: a V8

Things you don't need in your life: Scrotes casing your joint.

Case closed, your honour. wink

If I leave it on the road, they'll still need to get in the house to get the keys and they already know where I live and i can't leave it elsewhere as I need it to get to work.

I'll be phoning VWFS first thing tomorrow to try and get rid asap.

Best option is to move down south, away from the car gangs.

Next best option is a steering lock. And lock all the doors inside your house, so they cannot get the keys. And a protective case if keyless.

Would have to agree, with a young family you don't need the hassle, park it somewhere else for a while and buy your neighbor a beer.

Whatever you do, don’t risk yours of your families safety for a car. Many have been injured or killed this way and you alone are no match for committed criminals.

It’s a metal box that can be replaced. If you must then park it elsewhere for the next 6 weeks or buy the new car early and use it whilst keeping the golf somewhere else.

Be safe.

What about contacting the police to see if they'd be interested in setting up a stake out to catch them in the act?

Virtually guaranteed to clear up loads of other similar crimes at the same time.

The police always work better on good intel.

I'd agree with this. Far better than a burglar alarm.
