No point worrying about what others think, so long as you're happy with your car then stuff anybody else.

Hey don't knock it.

I had my first ever sexual encounter in a viva. I was 17 and a bit and we had been talking about it for weeks but we never got a chance to be alone, there was always some family commitment or crisis that got in the way.

Anyway, It was August 1981 and we were coming back from grandad's funeral, I remember the car just skidding to a halt, I grabbed the dash and door and asked why she stopped. She didn't say a word. She just switched off the car, shuffled over to my side, stroked my forehead, kissed my eyelids and the top of my nose. I was sad and bloody excited at the same time! I felt really guilty because I should have been mourning, but I had waited months for this (it felt like years!). I wanted to say no, this is not the right time or location I dreamed about, but she put her fingers on my lips to stop me from talking and just whispered with incredibly hot breath "No need to say anything, it's okay, it's okay".

It was like a bloody film, I remember it like it was yesterday!

Obviously, I'm not going to tell you what happened, we are all adults here, and this is not one of those websites, but even if it was, I have too much respect for my grandma.
Haha brilliant.

I just got a price for my nearly 18yo son to drive an ST170 and he could nearly buy a Golf R for the same price. Who the hell is insuring the OP?

Luxury!
When I were a lad I ‘ad to sculpt a car out of coal. And we were grateful.

(Etc)
Luxury! We used to dream of 'avin' coal...
'ad dreams of 'avin' coal? Luxury. When ah wert lad we didn't even manage to dream of coal.

As for some young whippersnapper yipping and having a Focus ST at 18? Don't expect any sympathy from this bald headed old man who was unlucky enough to have a Talbot Avenger 1.3 at 18. Fecker was maroon and had been repainted with a brush.

Brush painted cars! It used to be quite normal to repaint your car with a brush, in fact you could buy litre tins of 'Parsons repaint' from your local car accessories shop(used to be one on every corner smile ). Although I preferred Dulux Non - drip applied with a 4 inch brush. Them
were t' days, non of this car renting bks then.

18 years old?

You haven't even finished university at 18 so shouldn't even be in a car.

Earliest someone should own a car is early to mid 20s......

Oh wait this is is PH.......

On another note, how can a Golf R owner be a snob? There is nothing positive, from an image point of view, about the Golf R.

I havent got an issue with leasing, but when you do lease your monthly costs are based on depreciation.
It’s also written off against a business and ultimately lowers your tax bill so abit of justified depreciation is ok

I wouldn’t want to buy a second hand car you’re mostly buying someone else’s problems/cast offs

Surely if these people make the OP feel so bad about owning a focus 170 an give him stick they can hardly be called Friends.

Far more to life and enjoying cars than having the newest number plate.

Interesting thread.

I've never personally given a toss what anyone else drives. There's usually a bit of banter between the other car blokes at work about what we drive, but there's no malice.

I've had a few Mondeo comments, mind. My usual response is "it's a Ghia X, though."

Not sure whether to ask this.

But are you saying your Grandma kissed you?

Nobody gets there front door smashed in and a baseball bat waved in there face for the keys to a ST170 so just laugh at all the golf r owners if it makes you feel any better.

I reiterate my point of don't give a fk what anyone else thinks about anything you drive.

I'm going to leave now as this is slowly descending into buy vs lease.

All the best OP and don't give up. smile

Secondhand cars are someone else's problems? Errr...really?!!! Somewhat shortsighted I think.

I can see op’s point literally everyone I work with and most of my friends think anything that’s not German or under 3yrs old is crap.
I’m currently driving round in a mint condition Mondeo ST220. It has heated comfy leather seats, cruise control, auto lights and wipers, 220bhp, and a glorious V6 soundtrack yet I have been ripped to shreds by someone who drives a brand new 1.0 Corsa with 85bhp, cloth seats and not much else that they change every 2-3 years on a merry go round pay monthly and by 2 others 1 who drives a leased Polo and another that has a newish diesel Astra. They genuinely think there cars are far better than mine because they are new “current” models they don’t look outside of the bubble and realise that my near 14yr old car has a better interior, twice as much power and is far better to drive.
Same when I had my Focus ST225 a guy in work with an old diesel A3 spoke down about it. Couldn’t be bothered to tell him it was worth more New and used and is better in every way than his poverty spec diesel.

It could be a lot worse, OP. I was banging around in a brown Opel Kadett (a MkI Astra by any other name) when I was 18.

Note: Picture nicked off t'internet. My Kadett was in a shocking condition, unlike the tidy one shown here. hehe
