Which leaves the mighty Suzuki Jimny and the Jeep Wrangler as the only new vehicles with solid front and rear axles....
Playing Devil’s Ad, why does that matter? The entire world is now covered in roads, extreme off-roading for people with the money to buy brand new cars is purely a leisure pursuit. It’s not a requirement for anyone in reality. The entire reputation of this car was built on a foundation of rugged toughness. People put up with the poor handling because it was tough. It was the only tough, luxury off-roader available. Now, it's lost its one and only trump card. It's the Rolex GMT compared to the Submariner - looks the part, has more functionality, but it has 1/3 of the water resistance.

And arguably the reputation of this car was really built upon being able to transport a successful gangsta and his ho’s while looking and feeling awesome.
Like others I can’t quite get my head around the price tag but there’s no doubting the G63 is one of the great, great modern cars. It’s so utterly ludicrous and so utterly addictive. Maybe by making it more favourable on road they will have removed some of the magic of what was quite an agricultural thing with one of the best dirty V8s wedged unecassarilly into it for no purpose other than pure fun.

That may be so, but why does anyone buy a car that exceeds the speed limit? And why does anyone buy a dive watch when they don't get their watch wet?

That's a bizzare comparison the GMT stands apart from submariner and owes it nothing, it was made for a completely different purpose. Oh I totally agree, it doesn't matter at all. I just think it's an interesting factoid Sensei Rob said:

Think you'll find that there's nothing that'll match the G Wagen off road, and in it's prime market in the Middle East, these do get used off road all the time, just not in Chelsea. Gun bus. All the guns leave their cars at the lodge or house.
I’d say I and others have use our cars on approx 50% of days.
Would love to take a G to mix things up.
Better yet a Unimog

As for the unimog!!! It’s the vehicle we all struggle to find enough excuses to get approval from the Home Office for.
The outgoing G63 is a truck. With a nice but still basic interior. Sounds like a pissed off lion. Bit more space than a Defender width wise. It's got more in common with a Hilux than any normal SUV.
Not sure what people are on about saying they're not comfortable, they are. They even ride OK, but they are NOT an SUV. Thankfully.
They are a truck. Get over this and you realise it's a very fast truck, with a lot of character, that makes your laugh every time you drive it. It's like riding a bucking bronco that demands your full attention. It's definitely not a motorway car, but it is perfectly fine on the motorway just don't expect to relax driving it.
The trick with the G Wagen is to hardly touch the steering, and don't over drive it. It likes to take a set out of corners, thanks to the err, suspension? and if you give it too much lock it'll cock a wheel, or decide which direction it wants to continue going and balls to the brewery. That's part of the appeal.
I don't expect many people to get a G wagen as it doesn't make any sense like buying an Audi, RR, Porsche or whatever, but it is a whole heap of fun for anyone who loves big engined, basic cars dripping in character. Wasn't this forum founded on TVR's after all?? It's a shame they are mostly seen in Chelsea as they are a load of fun out of town and off road.

I like it, but looks about as good offroad as my wifes jeep liberty.
More space, quieter, better fit/finish and slightly better driving dynamics. In reality its all they needed to do to sell it for another 20years.
I wonder if the military versions will continue with the old model?
I think the military ones will stay the same until a specific replacement is made. I always liked the double doors at the back. More space, quieter, better fit/finish and slightly better driving dynamics. In reality its all they needed to do to sell it for another 20years.

That 3.0 V6 diesel power output seems a bit low at 204 bhp? Wasn't the previous G350d pushing out nearer 260 bhp?
I have a 61-reg GL with this engine pushing out 265bhp. I've never really understood why the G stuck with the older version of this engine, unless they didn't want to put the uprated 7G-Tronic gearbox in the G which could handle the increased torque. Apart from protecting the 5-speed box, I can't see any other reason why they'd want to keep the older engine.Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
