If you want Japanese Luxury just buy an LS430 for £3k less! confused
An LS isn't a patch on the Century.
Pull the other one!!

You'd have to be absolutely bonkers to spend £13k on that.
The LS is the Japanese equivalent of a Merc.
The Century is the Japanese equivalent of a Rolls.

Revolting thing, reminds me of an early 90's Lincoln Town Car.

I get what you're saying, but I've never understood the appeal of RR. If you look at the JD Powers quality surveys, the LS has won it something like 15 years straight and was voted world car of the year in 2007.

The century may have similar quality to the LS; I really don't know. From that point of view, I don't have a problem with it, but would just say that I'd stick with the LS, if only because its a well known car, has been for sale globally for, what, almost 30 years now?

I love it.

I also love the old school Toyota Crown. They used to be taxis in Singapore. Huge inside and felt rock solid. I'd love one.

That's a Century interior, not a Crown interior.

A valid comparison would be the 1997 Crown Majesta:

The Century wasn't designed for the driver, it was designed to be driven in. That's why the passenger seat backing folds down so the person in the back can put their feet up for example:

Japanese Rolls not that it is the same as an *actual* Rolls.

The LS is a lower car in the Toyota/Lexus range. Your argument is the equivalent of saying "Why bother with an S-Class Merc, you should buy an E-Class". Yes an E-Class is nice...but it's not an S-Class.

Very surprised at the leather and not velour!!
Most private Centurys are wool instead of leather in Japan because leather is considered too noisy by the Japanese businessmen that buy them. A leather interior is usually a sign the car was once a taxi, fleet or hire car (leather for ease of cleaning).

I'd have one as a second or third car. There's something a bit banana republic dictator-y about them, like swanning about in an old Merc 600 grosser, still just as smugly passing by the proletariat but more affordable.

More Rover 800 than Rolls Royce. Gotta love a V12, though...

Well, it looks like a Toyota Comfort that's been on the pies, it will drink like a fish whilst returning meagre performance in return, I would imagine it isn't the most fun on anything other than a smooth motorway, and parts availablity is likely to be migraine-inducing.

That Japan-import E38 740 linked in the article, on the other hand, looks absolutely stunning, even at nearly £9k.
If you mean the Toyota Crown Comfort taxi, the Century was out decades before it existed.

How can you compare the two if they're from different brands? It's like saying a Phaeton is better than an A8, they're not even in the same hierachy? boxedin

That makes absolutely no difference, it still looks rubbish (and has Hilux switch gear). The only thing I like about that is the very nice looking gearstick.

IMO my Dad's 1997 Honda Legend had a better Interior than that Toyota and you can pick them up for buttons!!

Love this, but would never want to own one. The bork factor is off the scale! Just imagine how many bespoke parts it must have, I bet even basic service items and components are near impossible to obtain in the UK.
I imagine that any Century specific parts would be hellish to get hold of...but it's basically a top end Lexus and they hardly go wrong so you'll probably not need more than basic service items... Which would probably be shared with the LS etc.
If the part is available, any Toyota dealer can order it. There are several web sites that will let you look up part numbers.

(I doubt if your insurance would cover a new windscreen, though. smile)

Because until fairly recently, Lexus wasn't even a thing in Japan. Lexus is a brand created by Toyota to be able to sell their high end / luxury cars without prejudice to western markets. It is not the same as the Audi/VW relationship.
