Friends lack of car knowledge

I'd imagine you're friends with them as you have some common interests and their lack of car knowledge should just become null and void as that's not your shared interest. I also find it a lot easier when someone claiming stuff I know to be false but I realise it's not their forte of knowledge I would just bite my tongue and smile.
I have many interests and friends with different interests. In each one of my friend groups I probably have lack of knowledge in our shared interest as I like to surround myself with people better than me to learn from.
Example, I have many really musical friends who are incredibly musically talented. I however suck at the guitar in comparison, but we share love for music and I really hope the think any less of me for my lack of ability.
And in all honesty I really doubt there's many of my friends who have complete car knowledge. The car industry has so many variations that unless you're rain man I doubt you can spout heaps of trivia about every car / type of car. Again, I have friends who are completely into fast fords and probably know far too much trivia about zetec engines etc. On the other hand they probably know very limited amount of information on Rovers and the k series engine.
I find it a lot more tranquil and relaxing to find out the shared or common interests and encourage conversation on that. Eff it, I even have some friends where the only reason we hang out is because we're both barking mad and find the same silly stuff hilarious.
Absolutely. I don't care that these friends have no knowledge of cars, I'm just surprised, almost, that your average man or woman knows so little about them. I will openly admit when I know nothing about a subject and will usually keep quiet for fear of embarrassing myself yet with cars it seems that a lot of people seem to think they know a lot about them when they know nothing. As mentioned by someone else, a classic is the belief that anything German and premium is definitely faster than anything by Ford/Vauxhall/Renault etc.I have many interests and friends with different interests. I've changed the valves in the engine of my first car (original Mini) and completely rebuilt a Honda 750 F1 from the ground up, but I can't remember the number plate of my current car.
Not knowing all there is to know about a car doesn't mean you don't know diddly about cars, it probably just means you don't care enough to remember it all. I'm pretty sure your friends have other interests in which they're quite well versed, but would challenge your knowledge, even at a basic level, if they were to challenge you.

A friend of mine used to have a Saxo, was his first car, he loved it.
He was looking under the bonnet of my mates Mk1 Golf GTi he had at the time, and got excited. When we asked him what he found so interesting, he said, 'it's almost the same as my Saxo!'. When we asked how they were the same, 'They both have horns near the wheels'.
Turned out he was talking about the suspension turrets.
He got rid of the Saxo after getting some minor advisories on the MOT, as apparently when a car gets advisories it's expensive to run.
A more generic one I hear from quite a few people is 'oh my car is brilliant on petrol, I put £20 in it and it lasts me all week'. Tells you nothing!

I have no idea what any of those are, are they mass produced vehicles anyone can buy?
If you want to ask me about my cobra feel free, but I'd rather be driving it, or ask me about my music which is a much more interesting
As someone else said not everyone has the same interests, that's why life is interesting

It's amazing the number of people who still think the petrol cap to a Ford Focus is on the offside rear! When will they learn?
When they get to the filling station ?I didn't know this either but having never owned one I didn't feel the need to learn this vital information.....

It annoys me at the supermarket after buying the food when I have to go out and check the registration so I can enter it in the machine near the checkout. When I first passed my test, the first thing the plod would say after stopping a teenager behind the wheel was, 'Is this your car and what is the registration?' I guess they have more sense than to ask the same to anyone over the age of fifty?

Yes it’s highly annoying. I get that some people just aren’t into cars but when people who don’t know anything about cars but act like they do or argue about it with you it gets annoying. I’ve had a whole range of things in work from a girl who banged on about her 116d being the best thing ever and how fast it was etc. And after dissing my car she would not believe me when I told her my ST was faster. She and others simply think anything Premium badged must be faster and better in every way than say my Ford.
It also annoys me when u get guys in work who claim to be “into cars” and have good car banter then they buy a run of the mill diesel with a sporty bodykit on and tell everyone how rapid it is to the point everyone believes them. One guy was telling people he was looking at Gti’s, ST’s Vxr’s etc then turned up in a diesel Astra Gtc with about 130bhp and talks about it like it’s a hot hatch
Well m8, a 116D sounds like it's a BM. If it is it's like way better than a Ford even if you've got an ST. It is a premium brand for an obvious reason, it's premium. BMs are designed to be Ultimate Driving Machines and anybody who knows anything knows that. I don't get looks of envy when I'm in my BM because people don't know, it's because they do know - that they're looking at someone who's been successful, has good taste and has reached the ultimate in drivers' cars.
They're rear wheel drive to help put the power down and help them handle better but you need to be able to drive the rwd and not a lot of people can do that. That's partly why, as a BM driver, you get so much respect from other drivers.
Even you acknowledge it as a premium brand, so admitting it's better than a Ford, Vauxhall, VW etc. She's obviously got good taste, can probably drive quickly and well and has obviously been successful.
Not only are BMs a clear statement of the driver's success, girls are much more likely to go with a chap in a BM than, say, a Ford because it's a nature thing, they see the BM driver as the Alpha male of the pack. Seriously, with your ST, is it the diesel STD?, if you met a girl and said 'I've got a BM, fancy a ride?' or you said 'I've got an STD, fancy a ride?', who are they going to go for.
BM wins every time.
