Chris Tarrant - Drink Drive
Discussion
When I'm driving on a night out, or know I'm going to be driving a bit later, I drink zero alcohol.
Also, I go out drinking every Friday, and Saturday night. Quite often I will still be consuming alcohol at 3am, sometimes 4am. I wouldn't dream of driving the next morning, and I have even invested in a personal breathalyser, which I would use before I drove in the early afternoon.
Apart from the safety aspect, my license means the world to me... it amazes me that some people would jeopardise theirs!?

Same here. Perhaps it's different for some, but my ability to drive is like my ability to walk. Also, I go out drinking every Friday, and Saturday night. I've no job, no hobby, no life without it.

How late in the day have you been before your breathalyser says you're under the limit? Also, I go out drinking every Friday, and Saturday night. Nobody really picked up on what I said earlier but the common consensus of being ok to drive once PM hits is pretty risky when you stop drinking around 2am.

I have to say, I abhor grassers. There is a grassing culture in this country now, many people seem to revel in it.
I am sure someone will reply with "imagine if that person then killed your child" or somesuch emotional nonsense. I don't like grassers.

I agree, it's always 'think of the children'. What a weak snivelling society we've become. A punch in the face would be a reality check for some of the people who post on here with their eutopian views. We need a united society not a load of eunuch curtain twitchers.
Then everyone's clear and we are all 'united'.
Then we can lift the punishment up markedly. Two drink driving offences = banned for life. Reoffend = serious time.
How accurate are the breathalysers you can buy in comparison to what the Police use? I know in Oz that you can have a restricted licence following a conviction. I've always wondered why not the same in the U.K., a ban removing someone's revenue etc is not helpful to the big picture IMO. Only education can address the issues.
At roughly 2pm, after say 8 pints, the reading would be in the low teens, I'd still be a bit aprehensive.
I generally don't drive on a Sunday, until I visit my dad at 4.30 for the 2nd half of the footy. I can say, without any shadow of doubt, my standard of driving is not 100% what it would be, if I hadn't consumed any alcohol the night before.

I'm not in favour of absolute zero tolerance levels though, but I would be cautiously in favour of the Scottish levels being rolled out in England and Wales.
Is there any evidence that suggests changes at this level have a material impact on road safety? Would this stop somebody getting in a car & driving after 4 or 5 pints? Personally I would rather legislation/policing was focused on stopping these people rather than the somebody who has 2 small wines & is just over the limit. [quote=GT03ROB]

Hasn’t been said on this thread yet. A zero limit apart from the morning after where full discretion should be observed at all times should be law. Anyone enforcing otherwise should look at heat x

Maybe a zero limit when posting should be enforced...... some posts would make more sense!! If you can't do the time then don't do the crime. DD is rightly frowned on by the majority now. However, it is still endemic in country pubs. The previous village I lived in a prime example. 90% of the regulars that didn't live in the immediate village centre used to drive to and from the pub. Very rarely would anyone leaving have passed a breath test. I frequently felt like shopping the worst offenders, but tbh if I had been that way inclined I never would have been off the phone.
I'm frankly amazed at how many people say they would not report someone who was clearly not fit to drive trough drink
Their is zero need to drive whilst over the limit and I would not hesitate to report someone if I suspected they were over the limit - it could be my son, my friends that they plough in to and kill
People who drink and drive (even more so those who believe its OK to do so) totally disgust me
Am I talking from experience - yes - my ex wife has been done twice - she is my ex precisely because of her drink driving actions

it is weird he pled guilt though. I guess the witness must have advised different.
''‘Once he was at home, as he was not to drive himself again that day, he freely admits he drank a quantity of alcohol – some brandy and later some wine. ‘Having been at home for some time, he was called upon by a police officer who approached him outside his house and required him, following information received by a member of the public, to take a breath test.''

Drink driving is both inexcusable and indefensible. But - if he got home, was there for "some time", and then got breathalysed - how the hell did he get caught?!
Surely, if you claimed your neighbour had pissed you off, and you got home and drank a big glass of rum / whiskey / brandy / whatever, when you're already at home.... how could they charge you?
Even if there's testimony you were drinking at the pub, how could they prove you were over the limit when you were driving, if they didn't catch you in the act?
