I think it looks great.
I recently drove the 90PS TSI variant (courtesy car) in High Up form and it was good fun and nippy.
These cars will be quicker than the 8.8s 0-62 time, i reckon.
The thing i noticed with the 90PS one (which i believe is the same engine in a lower tune) was the slightly mushy throttle response that you tend to get from turbo, compared with a n/a. So whilst the 90 was much quicker than the 60 and 75 n/a variants, it perhaps didn't have the initial quick responses that they give.
It was more of a press...wait...and go style.
I say that as the engine didn't really have much beyond 4k revs. It was a kind of use the midrange / torque type drive rather than a 'work the engine and gearbox hard' kinda style. In that respect i thought 'GT' might be the more accurate term for the GTi (if it's like the 90, that is) But the up is a thoroughy good all-round car.
I think they'll sell plenty.
I also see the Swift GTi as more of a rival to this than the Polo. Yes, it's more 'Polo' in size..but i anticipate a £14kish price (isnt the Polo GTi closer to £20k?) and the 140ps engine is also a lot less than the 200ish from the Polo.
I see the Swift giving this up! a hard time to be honest as previous Swifts have been well sorted. Lets hope they dont mess it up.
Unfortunately the rumour is that the new Swift Sport is £18k, which is too pricey for me. I've owned both previous Swift Sports, so it's a shame I won't own the new one.I recently drove the 90PS TSI variant (courtesy car) in High Up form and it was good fun and nippy.

Can't link it here but Misha Choudrin (Boosted Boris) on YT gave an interesting point of view on why he wouldn't buy the Up! GTI compared to say the TSI. I got to page 3 on here and the feedback seems to be a resounding 'yes' but I think Misha puts across some relevant points against the GTI. Someone can link it here I'm sure.
Drums on the back purely from an emotive point of view is off putting for me.

Who? What?Drums on the back purely from an emotive point of view is off putting for me.
I usually run a mile from anything VW Group, but I have to say, this looks great.
Re the drums on the rear, isn't most braking done at the front where the weight shifts under braking.
I also didn't realise it was available as a 5-door. The black one earlier in the thread looks fantastic.
I'm wondering whether they held out this long because they were worried about it cannibalising sales from further up the range.
Not sure I'd want a Polo when this is available.

As previous posters have mentioned, Suzuki have owned this sector with the Swift Sport for years. Having driven one, they're a bit of a hidden gem and a sad victim of badge snobbery in the UK. Stick a VW badge on that car and they'd be a ten-a-penny, so I definitely think there are plenty of buyers out there looking for this type of car.
They really have made the new one look ugly as sin though.squareflops said:

If you look up Misha Charoudin (sorry spelt horribly wrong above) on YouTube it will be one of his most recent videos. He runs Apex Hotel @ Nurburgring and is a great a spokesperson for NBR in general (IMO) squareflops said:

that's based on the fact he has the sub seven up which is track spec with £10k's worth of suspension a bigger turbo running 150bhp, stripped and upgraded everywhere, the GTi would offer him nothing, there is no improvement in the GTi over the stock car that would enhance its tuning potential over what he has built, its a 30k car if you had to pay full price for all the parts and work Drums on the back purely from an emotive point of view is off putting for me.
he was also wrong about VW just being able to drop the golf R 4 pot in it, just because a race car builder can chop one about and fit the 4 pot does not mean it would go in on the factory line
and for those that dont know this is Misha and hes soon to be available to rent sub 7 up, he runs a great channel, although he does live a bit in fantasy land about what normal people could afford to pay for things

Agreed re the comparison between the GTI and sub 7 Up, totally irrelevant and putting the Golf R engine in, uh no. It is interesting however that the TSI and GTI share much of the same components even down to the seats, assuming he's correct about that. The only addition the GTI gets is the tartan cloth insert, I'd definitely want something more supportive in the sporty model - see the ignis Sport with the Recaros, and that's Suzuki. The TSI with a tune seems to get close to the GTI output without the added cost.he was also wrong about VW just being able to drop the golf R 4 pot in it, just because a race car builder can chop one about and fit the 4 pot does not mean it would go in on the factory line

I still do think the GTI is super cool though, if it had discs all around and good seats I think it would be even more attractive, but of course more money so everything's a compromise.

I have an early-2016 Swift Sport but given the choice between a new SSS 1.4T or Up 1.0T I'd choose the Up.
My Swift is a size class larger than the Up and is comparable with an early-2016 Polo, yet my Swift seems to have no more internal or boot space than the Up or other really small town cars.
Nor does my Swift have the low running costs of a small town car; on a long fast run it gives roughly 25% less mpg compared (about 40 vs 50) to my wife's Vauxhall Viva despite the Viva having only five gears and nearly 4000rpm on the motorway.
I agree the boot space in the Swift isn't great, but rear legroom is pretty good. The difference in mpg shouldn't be surprising when the Swift has a revvy 1.6 NA engine vs the Viva's 1.0 3 pot and eco tyres etc.My Swift is a size class larger than the Up and is comparable with an early-2016 Polo, yet my Swift seems to have no more internal or boot space than the Up or other really small town cars.

Would be nice if they offered a performance pack with more power, discs all round and buckets
I think a 1.0T up to 1.2T with 100-130hp is plenty for a car like this.Increase engine cc too much and it'll become unnecessarily thirsty when used in the daily rush hour commute.
Turbocharge it too much and the lag will get worse.
Boost the power too much and it'll just spin the wheels instead of put the power down; tyres too small and insufficient weight on the drive-wheels.
