RE: Volkswagen Up! GTI: Driven

In his defence though you did say:
"take the vw badge off and nobody would buy a single one of them"
And neither the Mii or Citigo have a VW badge.
I think you will find they have many vw badges as do most vag products there printed on virtually every part "take the vw badge off and nobody would buy a single one of them"
And neither the Mii or Citigo have a VW badge.
But to be fair if I was a vw fan boi I still wouldn’t buy one because I would rather buy a lupo which looks about a 25 year newer design

Very interested in this for myself - All the performance you realistically need on our roads, fun handling and cheap to run - Well equipped as standard too. I think it genuinely looks good too... Better than anything else in that segment to my eyes at least.
I wish there was a configurator and the ability to discuss deals on them now, only a couple of weeks though.

Obviously doesn’t help for pricing, but it’s on the vw.de configurator to get an idea of colours etc. I wish there was a configurator and the ability to discuss deals on them now, only a couple of weeks though.
I think it looks great.
I recently drove the 90PS TSI variant (courtesy car) in High Up form and it was good fun and nippy.
These cars will be quicker than the 8.8s 0-62 time, i reckon.
The thing i noticed with the 90PS one (which i believe is the same engine in a lower tune) was the slightly mushy throttle response that you tend to get from turbo, compared with a n/a. So whilst the 90 was much quicker than the 60 and 75 n/a variants, it perhaps didn't have the initial quick responses that they give.
It was more of a press...wait...and go style.
I say that as the engine didn't really have much beyond 4k revs. It was a kind of use the midrange / torque type drive rather than a 'work the engine and gearbox hard' kinda style. In that respect i thought 'GT' might be the more accurate term for the GTi (if it's like the 90, that is) But the up is a thoroughy good all-round car.
I think they'll sell plenty.
I also see the Swift GTi as more of a rival to this than the Polo. Yes, it's more 'Polo' in size..but i anticipate a £14kish price (isnt the Polo GTi closer to £20k?) and the 140ps engine is also a lot less than the 200ish from the Polo.
I see the Swift giving this up! a hard time to be honest as previous Swifts have been well sorted. Lets hope they dont mess it up.

The wheels are ridiculous. I'd be interested if it had 14" or 15" wheels, but not with those horse-drawn carriage wheels.
The German market configurator offers optional 15" alloy rims (bare) for about 500 euros, or a set of winter tyres (skinny 165/65s) on 15" wheels for just over 700 Euros. Configurator even shows the car in this configuration if you play about. Take a look here: https://www.volkswagen.de/app/konfigurator/vw-de/d...
And enter the code VROOZTGB
This is the first ever car I've genuinely wanted, that I could actually afford to buy brand new.
I won't, of course; I'll much more likely buy it used after having had a previous generation Swift Sport and probably a Twingo 133 first. Now I have to commute a short distance along a fast B road every day, these little pocket rockets are exactly what I need/want.

The apparent lack of speed is part of the appeal for me. I'm looking at something to replace my 5 door Golf R, we have a Golf R estate for family duties. We're currently looking after the in-laws Fiesta and I've really enjoyed it on the few occasions I've driven it. There is a weird pleasure to be had from getting the most out of a car that doesn't have you recklessly exceeding the speed limit with the slightest press of the accelerator.
So currently, it's either one of these or a 987 Boxster S.
I've just speccd one on the german configurator as best I could lol
Grey 5 door
black roof
Beats stereo
Some other minor stuff
€17k (£14.9k)
Finance came out as (if I can figure out german);
1.99% APR
€9k balloon (£7.9k)
€2k deposit (£1.7k)
€187 per month (£165) x48
If that's similar in the UK this will fly off the shelves

The world has kind of forgotten the joys of thrashing a car about, such is the power levels of even mundane cars nowadays.
