Isn't that because the Z4 was going to be built as a new Austin Healey? I think BMW believed they owned the name as part of their buy out of the Rover Group.

Hey ! just to make you sick - I went to sea as a Radio Officer when I was 19 in 1965. Fantastic wages and life. Rented a flat in West Hampstead in '68 and bought a '63 Healey 3000 MK2. Paid £550 for it and sold it for the princely sum of £500 when I was married. . Stated mileages are a joke as the speedo went into the transmission tunnel between the driver and passenger seat and could be unscrewed so no odometer (and no speed indication!) . I really wanted an E-Type but the one I saw was £100 more and I couldn't afford that.
