My dad recently sold his 70K 2005 MK 5 GTI with full VW Service history and fresh MOT to WBAC for around 3 - 3.5K can;t remember exactly. VW wanted to give him 2.5K as part-ex.

Based on my personal experience of selling a MK5 GTI privately, don’t bother.
O/T but what was so wrong with your experience in selling the MK5? If I remember correctly I purchased it from yourself. Apart from being an overly enthusiastic 21 year old who had loads of questions I thought it was a pretty pleasant exchange.

Thanks,
Faz

MK5 GTI arent worth very much.
I think it's a fair and reasonable offer.

Simple solution, sell it privately if you want more.

It's meerely an offer from a hassle free selling site.

I will buy it bank transfer payment to you for fair money if you want to send me a message and come and collect it.

if your honest ( sounds like you are) and send some pics over first.

Also try Tootle (recommended in another thread).

You put in the valuation you want and then Garages bid on it..! Experiences seem positive so far and im going to try them in the next month when i get rid of the Mrs Focus.

The guys (& girls) at WBAC make commission if the car makes a profit.

Might've had every Tom,Dick and Harry before you asking if it would keep with a Golf R once remapped...

I would suggest them as well, sold 2 cars through them, apart from a £15 reduction as the milage had gone up by a couple of hundred miles from the valuation date, no issues at all, would sell to them again.
Suppose the st cars you have it works out better than the scrapyard

Perhaps he meant "don't bother..............because you should keep it and in a few years, despite being mediocre, it will be worth a fortune because all the kids who craved one when they were new will then be in their 40's and have the money to 'live the dream' by paying ridiculous money for one......"

Then again maybe he meant "it was a nightmare because nobody wanted to buy the bl**dy thing"

OP a little more information may help.

What colour, how many doors, which interior (tartan or leather), which wheels, any other extras?

Where are you in Scotland?

I’ve only had positive experiences of WBAC sold a handful of cars to them - one they contacted me to sell oddly as they had a buyer (it was pushed through to CarCraft)

My wife sold her 1yr old Tigra to them in 2008 with under 700miles on it and they paid full list for it which was odd as there wasn’t a wait list and it wasn’t special at all but was happy to get that which was more than what we paid for it brand new!

I know there are horror stories but but transparent and clear and comprehensive and all will be fine smile

I’ve sold a car through WBAC and one through Evans Halshaw.

WBAC kept to the appointment time, went over the car with a fine tooth comb (didn’t find anything not declared) and I did a 5 minute drive up and down the road going through first 3 gears and reverse. They honoured their offer and then deducted the fee and cash landed 3 days later.

Evans Halshaw were running about an hour behind the appointment and then spent 5 mins walking around the car with an iPad and then starting it and revving it a bit while telling me it was immaculate. He then sent the details off to his buying team and 30 mins later a lower figure than valuation came back (apparently they only quote from one owner cars) but still a couple of grand more than WBAC and px offers. Bit of faffing around after they rejected my proof of address documents (lifted from the list on their website) and a deal was done and 3 days later the money landed in my account.

YMMV

I can recommend WBAC. Yes they'll offer you a little less than you may want or could get from a private sale but they will save you a lot of time and a lot of hassle.

I spent ages cleaning my car, taking photos, creating ads (Ebay, PH, Autotrader, all of which cost), for prospective buyers to not turn up and waste even more of my time.

It could take weeks to sell and most likely not even for the price you want. Take it to WBAC or Evans Halshaw and save yourself the hassle.

Edinburgh, 5 doors, shadow blue, heated leather Vienna (crème), and an upgraded VW touchscreen with Bluetooth, standard 17 Monza wheels

I have had to cancel the valuation this morning as I have been called into work which is a right pain.

Yup, got it valeted, did the photos, spent £ on AT and did ebay as well - have had to deal with timewasters so far and nothing else. I don't have the time for it so WBAC or EH appeals - rescheduled for next week now. Gives me a bit more time to search for something I want to replace it.

There is quite a bit of competition with these car buying services now. So get multiple quotes and arrange some viewings.

The ones that come to you are the best - no loss situation! Just 15-20 mins of your time, if you don't like your offer send them on their way. If you're prepared to turn down an offer you usually get the best price in my experience.

Tootle or the other one (can't remember their name now) are good. It's just a network of dealers. But they will all come to you which makes them already better than WBAC etc.

I sold a Mk2 Fabia vRS to We Want Any Car last year and was pleasantly surprised with the price I got in the end. Had to send a few other companies and dealers on their way, but it was still easier than a private sale.

I tried for 2 months to sell privately and had very little interest - private buyers seemed to want to pay trade prices! In future I'd probably go the same route as above. A lot less hassle.

I recently sold my Mk5 GTI, 2007 with 90k on the clock and full VW history and VW dealer warranty.

Ended up getting 5k for it, WBAC offered around 4k at the time. Car was the cheapest on AutoTrader for age and mileage but took almost a month for it to shift.

Seeing it from the buyers perspective, from a trader at least in theory you have some come-back if it's a lemon.

So I need to sell my MK5 Golf GTi - love the car, but new commute requires a white goods diesel automatic. Don't want to spend more than 5k and the dealer offers for my GTI are ludicrously low, circa 3k-3.5k for my 69k gti. WBAC have offered £4200 - the car probably needs £500 spending at the next MOT in a few months (cv joint, discs all round), and I wanted £5k privately. The market up in Scotland is a lot quieter than down south, so I figure 4200 is not bad at all, and I really don't have time to do a bunch of private showings, my weekends are worth more than that to be honest.

So... aside from a 1p ding in the boot and a scratch on one alloy, it's in extremely good condition.

What are people's experiences of WBAC chipping you down? How big a test drive and cosmetic examination is done? If they offer 4k and over I am fine with it, anything less and frankly I'd rather garage it until the summer for some fun down in the borders. Anybody had any relatable experience? I have searched the forums but wanted to get an up-to-date view now that they are owned by BCA.

Cheers!
Have you said it has a full service history? If so, does it really? ie, the service book may say 12,000 miles or every year. They will then expect to see a stamp for every year. Evidence of belt done? Is that in the service schedule and was it done on time?

Stone chips - they will go round it with a fine too comb.

Parking dings, tiny scuffs, marks on alloys....

Does the car come with two keys? If not, have you marked that down?

I was quoted just £7300 for my mk6 golf GTi. 59 plate 5 door manual. Only 58k.
A dealer in Scotland gave me £9250 towards a 14 plate WRX STI.
Saved me a lot of messing about, and I would struggle for that on a private sale.
Of course it's all relative as I did a PX but the car I bought is priced the same as all others.
