So I need to sell my MK5 Golf GTi - love the car, but new commute requires a white goods diesel automatic. Don't want to spend more than 5k and the dealer offers for my GTI are ludicrously low, circa 3k-3.5k for my 69k gti. WBAC have offered £4200 - the car probably needs £500 spending at the next MOT in a few months (cv joint, discs all round), and I wanted £5k privately. The market up in Scotland is a lot quieter than down south, so I figure 4200 is not bad at all, and I really don't have time to do a bunch of private showings, my weekends are worth more than that to be honest.

So... aside from a 1p ding in the boot and a scratch on one alloy, it's in extremely good condition.

What are people's experiences of WBAC chipping you down? How big a test drive and cosmetic examination is done? If they offer 4k and over I am fine with it, anything less and frankly I'd rather garage it until the summer for some fun down in the borders. Anybody had any relatable experience? I have searched the forums but wanted to get an up-to-date view now that they are owned by BCA.

Cheers!
Have you said it has a full service history? If so, does it really? ie, the service book may say 12,000 miles or every year. They will then expect to see a stamp for every year. Evidence of belt done? Is that in the service schedule and was it done on time?

Stone chips - they will go round it with a fine too comb.

Parking dings, tiny scuffs, marks on alloys....

Does the car come with two keys? If not, have you marked that down?
yup yup and yup, have been honest about it as best as possible. As you say they will undoubtedly see things or argue over tiny imperfections, I expect that - I guess it's about gauging how far from the offer they will then still try and stray. It's a bit of a moot point today as I can't take it in but if I do next week I will report back. I may even keep it for the summer as it is good fun but it's just about driveway space more than anything and WBAC offers a fast way to sell it - seems a lot of people here have had decent enough experiences contrary to what I expected.

WBAC works when it works, when they want your car.
That's how I understood it as well. If it's a car that's popular and relatively easy to shift on they'll offer a part-ex kind of price.

By contrast if you bung in details of a car that's perhaps rare, a bit niche or maybe a low mileage example where the mileage will make a difference in price it'll be pointless. I put my CLS63's details in and it gave a stupidly low price as it's a 2007 example with 17k on the clock but how easy is it to shift? Probably not very so you just wouldn't bother.

I sold them a Clio RS 197 a couple of years back. I purposely didnt tell them about the scuffed alloys as i had heard they try to chip you back irrespective.

They'd quoted £3200 on the website, so the car had "missed" a service because it hadnt been done every 12 months and the scuffed wheels took it back down to £3,000 on the day. I was happy enough with that - it was in line with my expectations.

Also try Tootle (recommended in another thread).

You put in the valuation you want and then Garages bid on it..! Experiences seem positive so far and im going to try them in the next month when i get rid of the Mrs Focus.
I recently sold my GT86 via Tootle, £2.5k more than WBAC.......as long as you’re totally honest with the info on your car. No probs, it’s a great way to sell your car.

Butting in here. Has anyone sold to CarShop? They have offered me more than WBAC and the other sites for my S6. Again I thought about selling privately but that kind of car is going to attract tyre kickers and test pilots and I can't be arsed with it. I was honest on the online form, there offer is £400 more than WBAC.

Got an appointment tomorrow, see what happens. Just wondering if they are going to try and knock me down loads.

If it were in your budget then maybe...I'd keep the GTI or spend slightly less than your budget on a car you will enjoy and use the left over cash to offset the higher cost of fuel vs boring 4 cylinder diesel.

I've had 2 diesels, one a shed and the other a boring, quick-ish, white goods, automatic diesel. I got bored quickly and that was doing 90-100 miles per day which I still do. I'd potentially look for a nice 3 litre petrol BMW for around £3K, or a 3 litre turbo diesel BMW if you are doing a LOT of miles.

I'm happily looking for a boring diesel, it's only there to serve the A to B purpose in horrible commute traffic. I would keep the Gti but it's stiff, manual and not big enough anymore, plus really poor mpg when you are in 1st gear half the time sadly.

Sold a Fiesta ST to money4yourmotors.
Website said £9200. WBAC I think said £8500.
M4YM turned up, test drove, fanny’d about on the phone for 20 mins and came back with £8400 because ‘they put the details into a computer and it searches what the recent same cars have sold for’

So the website isn’t what you will receive if the car is perfect.

I sold my Volvo V50 to The Car Buying Group, no fees, I provided an online description, they called me for more details, gave me a price haggled a bit, added a wee bit more. Sent a guy from Leeds to Dumfries to collect it, he appraised it, didnt drive it apart from reverse out the space.
I made him wait till the money was transferred by BACS and off he went. no fees like WBAC(£60?) and £125 more with them doing all the running. I like that by sending an agent to collect the car they were commited to buying not like WBAC who have you in the palm of their hand.
Mine was a 138000m Volvo V50, 6yrs old some non visible faults and declared paintwork damage.

I'm guessing 2006!

I think the cream interior may be why you've struggled to sell it. For those that like it, it'll be very desirable but I expect most people looking for a Mk5 GTI either want grey/black leather (or tartan). The trade offers don't sound bad tbh.

I think you're absolutely right there on the interior colour. Tartan or black leather is more desirable. It's a shame because the creme colour makes the car feel more spacious. I'm taking it down next weekend to sell it. Went for a drive this morning and it's such a good all rounder but just not what I need anymore.

I always try and sell my cars privately, WBAC have yet to come up with a valuation which I haven't beaten elsewhere.

Looking at Autotrader, 70K mile Mk5 GOLF GTIs start at about £5750, so I would say its worth a go at trying to beat the £4K ish you've been offered.

That said selling a car privately is painful. So many timewasters out there. I tried selling my MX-5 before Christmas but gave up. The final straw was someone contacting me via Pistonheads Classified. We had several email exchanges ending with him saying, "I'll contact you next weekend, your car sounds just like the project I am after..." sure enough, I never heard from him again..... Its a shame people don't remember the old maxim "treat others like you would like to be treated yourself".........

..before that though, I did sell my old Merc CLK to a guy who contacted me via PH and was as good as his word, so you never know...

..so if you have the requisite patience I would advise go for a private sale.......

Why would they give you the price that similar cars have sold for recently ? Surely that means, when they come to sell it, they won't make a profit ? Should they not be giving you £1,000 LESS than similar cars have sold for recently ?

Where does it say they're giving the same price? Just because they search what recent cars have sold for doesnt mean that's what they give... i.e. the search may fling up £10k, so they give £8.4k.
