OP, there is a Golf GTi on Ebay at the moment with 63,000 miles, short MOT, Part service history and it's reached £5500 in bids with 6 hours to go.

This makes yours look very good value. Worth a go on Ebay? I've had reasonable results in the past. As long as you carefully vet the knuckle-draggers and refuse them entry, you might get lucky?

I always try and sell my cars privately, WBAC have yet to come up with a valuation which I haven't beaten elsewhere.

Looking at Autotrader, 70K mile Mk5 GOLF GTIs start at about £5750, so I would say its worth a go at trying to beat the £4K ish you've been offered.

That said selling a car privately is painful. So many timewasters out there. I tried selling my MX-5 before Christmas but gave up. The final straw was someone contacting me via Pistonheads Classified. We had several email exchanges ending with him saying, "I'll contact you next weekend, your car sounds just like the project I am after..." sure enough, I never heard from him again..... Its a shame people don't remember the old maxim "treat others like you would like to be treated yourself".........

..before that though, I did sell my old Merc CLK to a guy who contacted me via PH and was as good as his word, so you never know...

..so if you have the requisite patience I would advise go for a private sale.......
I've never had a problem selling privately, just ignore the rubbish buyers.
If that guy didn't call you back, so what? Someone else will come along.

Thats the trick. There are a lot more dolts out there than there used to be however, the right person will come along. I never fully believe the car is sold until the new owner has paid you in full and driving away in the car, that way i'm not disappointed when someone doesnt turn up or if they change their minds.

Why does OP need to change his car?

He is stating that he will look to buy what will be an old diesel sub £5k. Better the devil you know.

How many miles extra are you going to do? The miles in your car is nothing - it’s a tool to get you from a to b.

I’d say changing as per he original post is the worst possible option.

Alternatives are
1. Run GTI until it dies maybe 20 years hence.
2. Don’t buy an old cheap diesel likelyhood you’ll need to replace consumables which are more pricy on he diesel.
3. Keep GTI and lease a cheap Golf R.

I was going to use we buy any car as a last option when selling my BMW F10. I tried selling private before Xmas, cheapest in country and I only got time wasters that time of year. We buy any car would have probably ended up giving me about a grand less than their online valuation, so about 8700.

I actually sold it to a Toyota dealer who found me months ago through the website tootle. He paid me 9750 for it, which is a grand more than other traders were trying to have my pants down for.

The transaction was very smooth, he sent a collection company to get my car, money went straight into my account. Everyone happy.

It's currently on the dealers website for 12k, which is more than what I paid for it last summer with 5k more miles on the clock. Not bad for a basic spec manual m sport 5 series.

Why change your car only months after buying it?

Sold a Fiesta ST to money4yourmotors.
Website said £9200. WBAC I think said £8500.
M4YM turned up, test drove, fanny’d about on the phone for 20 mins and came back with £8400 because ‘they put the details into a computer and it searches what the recent same cars have sold for’

So the website isn’t what you will receive if the car is perfect.
I tried money 4 your motors with my old Audi A3.

Bloke who turned up was sound, proper geezer. Their website quotes high and they turn up and offer you a grand less. It's not the guys fault it was whoever he was on the phone to. If anything he was fighting my corner, the guy in the phone was trying to say the bonnet was covered in stone chips, his own inspection bloke was telling him they are not stone chips, but water marks! He was having none of it.

Went away empty handed.

Need something bigger, especially with my kid now in a bigger car seat. Boot space isn't any good for all the paraphernalia plus my golf clubs and trolley that normally sit in there. Also I need an automatic as my new drive is very very stop start, very uphill, lots of clutch footwork and it gets tiring. Am covering a lot more miles now. Plus the ride is stiff and the mpg is through the floor. 5k will buy a decent mondeo or insignia or mazda 6 which will tick plenty of boxes for the foreseeable future.

Because maybe his circumstances changed? Maybe he can afford to do as he pleases?!

Thanks for this. I'd ignored ebay as an option due to non payer on a car years ago. Actually does make mine look competitive.

You're welcome.

If you put on a Classified Ad then it usually sorts the serious buyers out. I'd never 'auction' a car. Put on good pictures and description and a phone number helps.

I've sold a couple of cars this way in your price bracket.

cheers and good luck

I mentioned Car Shop on the other page. I took my Audi S6 in at the weekend. I was honest on the online form, they found one other thing on the paintwork I have missed and knocked £125 off. Was pretty happy with that. Their quote online was much higher that WBAC or any of the others.

Selling privately was going to be a nightmare. It needed service and MOT and a big scratch fixing.

Based on my personal experience of selling a MK5 GTI privately, don’t bother.
O/T but what was so wrong with your experience in selling the MK5? If I remember correctly I purchased it from yourself. Apart from being an overly enthusiastic 21 year old who had loads of questions I thought it was a pretty pleasant exchange.

Thanks,

coffee

It's all the time wasters who don't buy it that are the issue, the ones that don't turn up, the ones that ask for more photos etc.

But I'd love to hear what the seller says hehe

I put it on just to see what happens really. Have had three conversations with what sound like knowledgeable people so here's hoping. I guess with ebay it's always that concern that the winner is a time waster and the previous bidders were genuine. I didn't know the rules of advertising so didn't want to link on here if it is against forum etiquette smile

I would have put a little more time into the photos myself. They’re a bit all over the place.

Also your description needs more formatting.

I did say I have little to no time these days but I could improve the advert thanks.

Bonnet shut is fine. It's a bad angle for some reason! I'll change that pic. If there was a problem with that I'd disclose it immediately.
