I was at Santa Pod once and ran a dead heat with a m235i with a JB4 smile
In a diesel.

He was a little better off the line, once rolling I was a little bit quicker

It is the figure you use multiplied by revs to get the figure that matters....BHP.

Before we know it someone will mention in gear times.

Look at the in gear times, that's a part insight into real world driving.

The D is 10% quicker, and thats on full throttle. Factor in normal driving and that advantage was significantly increased. I know. I had both before buying. I was only doing 11-12,000 miles per year, I didn't care about the mpg stats, the d was just the quicker, more refined, easier, better car to drive. And that before you look at the ability to do a 500+ mile round trip without filling up.

If the 640i had been even as good as the 640d, I'd have bought that instead.
In gear times.

Bingo!

What about that great Top Trump one...... 30-70mph in 4th?

Yeah, I had both engines too.

Did you even look at the link I posted, which shows there’s less than a second difference between the two, when aggregated across multiple magazine tests?

No. You know better. rolleyes Enjoy being right and winning the internet.

But both engines have very difference torque characteristics, makes the engine in those circumstances.

You can get as sanctimonious as you like, but I clearly did look at it to be able to comment on it (and see how it backs up what I said). rolleyes

How did a generic thread about diesels degenerate into a pissing contest about the 640d (arguably the most atypical diesel going, but hey...)?!?

Yeah - you’re right. I apologise (in general).

I had a long reply typed out, but, while checking over it before posting (as I always do), I found I didn’t even care enough, and I wrote it! I learned something today.

I don't understand "in gear" comparisons with these modern cars..90% of them are automatic and if you want to do manual shifts without downshifting then you probably don't care about acceleration anyway

It is a good test however to see how tractable the engine is.
No one wants to have to ring the neck of a car just to move.

laugh

You simply demonstrate the equivalent of hacking and gobbing on the street in Public, picking your nose and eating it, farting or burping loudly in a Restaurant, bad body odour, foul breath etc...

As such, you are likely guilty of any or all of the above. If that's how you choose to behave in Public, I guess that's your choice. smile

I wish they'd get rid of them sooner to be honest. Up north we seem to have a ton of them, all tuned up with DPF deletes. Every day without fail I end up behind one of them and I'm breathing in all the black sooty **** that comes out the exhaust every time they boot it.

Doesn't help I drive a hot hatch, its like a red rag to a bull, they boot it even more to prove a point. I could probably overtake them if I could see past the smoke screen.

And don't even get me started on the school run mums who do 3 miles a day in there BMW X5s with tyres wide enough to run a lorry.

You do make very good points, I also think the 20d route is the way to go for frugality in the 1 and 3 series. Where the 20d engine doesn't make as much sense is in the 5 series though, and when I ran my E61 520d and E90 330d together for a while they both returned the same mpg.

For the 5 series with its extra bulk I feel it's better having the 30d engine working less hard, rather than the 20d engine working its pips off using more fuel.
I think whats even more interesting is the (lack of) weight difference between the e60 (not sure about e61 tbf) and the e90.

I was quite surprised to find my M3 weighs near enough the same as our previous 530d yet feels so much lighter.

It stinks. Literally stinks from cold diesels idling in the traffic on short journeys. Glad the government is finally getting them out of the cities.
