RE: Renault Megane R.S: Driven
Discussion
Good that they haven't screwed it up and doubly good that they didn't do "a Clio" with it and saddle it with EDC as the only transmission option. But who's going to buy the 280hp version when the Trophy version is going to offer 300hp and has the benefit of allowing some time to shake the "new model" bugs out? I'd be waiting for the Trophy for sure.

Lot of bleating about the writing style - not as bad as his previous efforts I have to say. Nowt wrong with a bit of prose... I'll be very interested to see the comparison to a CTR. That and how the Trophy is going to turn out...
Let’s just pray that Cackett doesn’t write the review. RBH58 said:

Assuming the initial model is making 280HP and not more! The original road test figures achieved by the first batch of Megane 250s, weren't beaten by the subsequent 265 models.....even the last of the line 275 model was scarcely quicker!Don;t expect the editor to review and change the article, sadly he is the editor.....

First Trent, now Cackett. Pistonheads has went way way downhill over the last few years. It's a proper shame as it's turning into a glorified Car Throttle......

Megane RS 250, 265, 275
And that was back in 2011 / 12?!
So i feel the route of the previous Megane was mapped right at the very beginning and they like...steadily released them over the next 5 years ish.

Not quicker based on what measure? Stupid unreliable 0-62mph times? Standing starts undersell FWD cars because they have off-the-line traction problems. Doesn’t matter how much power you give a FWD hatch, you’ll struggle to get past 6 seconds 0-62mph. Compare the (much better benchmark) 3rd gear 50-80mph times and you will have a meaningful benchmark.

Megane R.S - current Hot Hatch King imo.
Better than the horrendous diamond cut alloys on the nob-cup model. I absolutely hate the current crop of diamond cut wheels, including the ones on my Clio Trophy. I'd much prefer black wheels.Megane R.S - current Hot Hatch King imo.
I'm glad the new Megane has come out well so far. I loved my 250 Cup and this will likely be the car that replaces my Clio next year.

You got black Fuchs on Porsches decades ago.
ok...completely black....You got black Fuchs on Porsches decades ago.
The kind of alloy that has no chrome dish/lip. The kind of wheel that has been designed but by virtue of being painted black renders the design invisible and pointless... that kind of black alloy wheel.
Hmm diamond cut...a nice finish but not on a part of the car so regularly damaged....much like nasty nasty black ones ...

Painted wheels are so easy to refinish though, especially black. The kind of alloy that has no chrome dish/lip. The kind of wheel that has been designed but by virtue of being painted black renders the design invisible and pointless... that kind of black alloy wheel.

I made the same point on the MINI Cooper S John Cooper Works thread. The black (and diamond cut) wheel thing is just bizarre. The kind of alloy that has no chrome dish/lip. Even on this thread, look at the image with the Cup and non-Cup next to each other. I think the non-Cup are 18s yet they noticeably fill the arches much better and, you can actually see the wheel design as the light falls on silver. The Cup car looks like it's been torched!
Diamond cut I almost understand as presumably they are targeting the fashion-conscious demographic, so I don't need to be concerned about that. But when Renaultsport, Lotus, Porsche etc. start doing it, I don't like it, not least because it means that if I'm looking for a car, I have to factor in new wheels or a refurb.
I think it’s true that the 250’s put out more than stated. It’s not a myth.
Certainly the press cars did! I’ve driven one or two over the years and there’s nothing in it with the 250 265 275 etc.
The first 250 I drove was putting out a lot more than that.
I have a feeling that this new one - when I get a chance to drive it - is going to be sodding brilliant.
I might buy a cup version of the old car soon.
I don’t know if I could buy any other car in which I could, given the sad intrusion of reality, actually go any faster. It’s an absolute masterpiece, the old car.

All black wheels can look good...but it's often difficult to see what style they are. But again if you aren't too concerned with how a wheel looks...it not a problem.
