Best car I've ever owned. If the started making them again I would buy two.

Lovely lovely car. Would have one in my fantasy garage. Proof that you don't need 400bhp and a fancy badge to have fun. Love the simplicity of it. I'd take a S1 over a S2 but either would make a great B road blaster. There's cheaper ways of going faster but that really isn't the point, you'll struggle to find a more involving hatch than one of these at any price range. It's just a shame the market has woken up to that now and I don't have one!

Regret selling both of mine, both white. First one went to a mate who wrote it off weeping

Second one is sorn, somewhere, it had a huge service history to die for.

Cant bring myself to shell out 4, 5, 6K though. Id never get time to use it, but if I spotted an original one local at the right price I might grab it.

This one got written off(check out my Dads 405 estate!)

Heres the other and my S2000, what a lucky young chap I was

Nice combination, I’ve always thought a roadster and a hot hatch are a good contrast.

I’ve never tried an S1 Rallye.
I almost bought an S2 but went for a GTI in the end as I wanted the nice seats.

I ran a S1 Rallye alongside my first Lotus Elise about 18yrs ago (Christ that makes me feel old and I'm just 40 and a bit).

Absolutely 100% honestly, the Rallye was as quick day-to-day as the Elise. You could just keep your foot on the pedal at all times.

Mine was red (no sunroof) with white Compomotive MO's, sticky Yokohamas, Spax adjustables and a strut brace. A total hoot until I melted the engine :-(

Would have another if I had the space. Would need to be a S1 though.

Had a red 106 rallye from 1994 to 1997. It was, no doubt, superb. Such a blast and I’d love to own another one.

I kept it completely standard apart from replacing the steering wheel with a momo leather number (same size) - that made it pretty much perfect.

It was the things which it was rubbished for which just made it so much more appealing. Noisy on the motorway, no creature comforts, the stripes, no alloys, crappy stereo, poor on-paper performance figures - never before have I owned a car which when criticised (and it was by many of my flashier colleagues) could I be justified in thinking “ you just don’t get it do you? “

I so remember taking roundabouts at what felt like reckless speeds (they weren’t really) and that feeling when the car was “on cam” from 5500 to 7200rpm as you changed up through the short ratio gear box as fast as possible as not to lose those delicious revs. Every day !

Brilliant fun...

Brilliant cars.

Hate to say it, but ... good old days...

I too feel that...even thoigh it's not cheap....surely this is a bit of a bargain?

Surely a safe investment!

Never had the pleasure of the Rallye, but we did have a phase 1 1.4 XSi for a couple of years. Great fun, and fondly remembered.

Peugeot used to make some cracking cars in the 90s.

I bought an S1 in red from a lady who'd given up on it when the head gasket went for £300.
£35 and a morning spent on it with some help from my dad and it was good as gold.
A good machine polish and wet vac and it was nearly as good as new too.

It really was an absolute scream to drive, I sold it when worked tried up for £700 in 2010(?) rolleyes

The 1.3 in these really was a special little engine, they genuinely don't make them like that anymore. It didn't even idle properly but get it on song and it was superb.
They had a Group N homologation plate on the front cross member too for added PH pointscool

How did Peugeot go from this (and the other amazing 80s/90s cars) to the last decade’s avalanche of awfulness???

“Reggie” – I absolutely love him! During every drive, there is a laugh out loud moment and a massive grin on my face.
The engine, the gearbox ( once warm), the handling, the turn in, what a driving experience!
They really are special little cars.

They really are smash ing cars!

High revving small capacity engine in a car that weighs about 800kg...

I find these type of pocket rockets infinitely more interesting than the hypercars, probably due to their attainability and their Q car status.

Would be interested to hear how quick these things are on track.

I used to have an S2 in Indigo Blue that I absolutely loved. Fitted with some good Yokohama tyres, it was just incredible. It was standard when I bought it, it even had the factory exhaust in place. The only modification I made was getting a stainless steel catback system made up for it.

I've never owned another car that was such good fun on a B road, which really mattered to me as I live in Northumberland so I can take my pick in any direction for twisty little roads and lanes. It had the most mobile chassis of any hot hatch I've ever driven, it felt near weightless and changed direction like a housefly. The sense of communication between the road surface and driver was just unmatched in the class. I would benchmark it against the Elise in terms of feedback and handling ability.

The gear shift was poor at slow speeds but like everything in that car, it came into it's own at speed where ramming it home like a touring car shifter produced fast, clean shifts. The suspension was a little crashy at low speeds but once you would the car up a little bit, it would flow and glide over the road surface in an unseemly fashion and you could really feel it reach that sweet spot where the springs and dampers felt at their best.
