That looks horrendous - I picked up my current 2005 3.0 Sovereign very cheaply at auction last year and have had a full inspection done.
It looks as though it has been lucky and looked after as I have no signs of rot.
I have taken the precaution of changing the auto and transfer case fluids and fingers crossed, it’s still a reliable and swift machine. 70,000 miles so far... fingers crossed.
A fine package in my view subject to condition!

That's not even the worst of it, I cut it back far further than that - in fact I had to brace the car to stop it bowing in the middle - it was immaculate when he first bought it, I checked it over thoroughly myself after looking at quite a few and bought it from a guy that had a garage full of classic Jags!
It started to show through about 3 years later. Obviously it'd been rotting internally well before that though.
And between buying it and then the transfer box tried to kill itself with the usual rear oil leak into the CV boot (you can't actually tell it's leaking unless the oil weeps out of the CV boot for the prop), the headlight loom melted because of a bit of stty wiring on Jag's part into the Ford fusebox, and the fan controller melted and tried to cook the engine because Jag in their wisdom puts a 75A rated fan control unit on an 80 amp fuse, so if a fan gets stuck with debris or draws more power with age, the module and wiring melts before the fuse does.

They fitted an uprated controller to the later cars but they still have some problems, just not as common.

It's a lovely car just to waft around in, but definately buyer beware!

My Dolomite Sprint was worse than that when it was 14 years old but they were recently lauded on here as being a fantastic car and any criticism at all as totally unfounded smile

Yeah, but I can cut out and repair both Dolly Sprint sills in less than a day, they're easy, that thing took 3 days just of cutting.

Plus, you get a Dolly Sprint at the end, not a mondeo in drag wink

I've had a couple of mk3 Mondeos and they've been the least rusty cars I've ever owned, my current one is 13 years old this year, has covered 142k and it's solid as the proverbial rock.

My 2002 one was going on 3 out of 4 doors and in front of the rear arches at 11 years old when I got rid of it. It was mainly cosmetic but I expected better.

Me neither. I could just never get on with these. Never liked them when they were new and I still don't like them now. The S-Type on the other hand has somehow grown on me, though this could just be early onset senility.

I think the problem for me is the squinty, piggy oval front lights, and having the smaller inner ones sat aligned with the bottom of the outer ones, not the top.

For another example of the alignment issue when the front lights aren't all the same size, compare Series I/II/III XJ (attractive) to X350/X358 XJ (not as nice). (The X300/X308 have both lights pretty much the same size. I think that looks OK.)

I'm sure I read that the early mk3's did suffer in those areas but Ford sorted the problem before the facelift cars were released, the pre-facelift mk1 Focus seems to be quite rust prone too.

I'm with this.

I've had literally dozens of Mk3 Mondeo's over the years and never had to put the welder near to one.

As for the X-Type not so good. Don't know what's currently available but in the past I've hunted high and low for sills and nothing's been available. The only way to get anything was to buy was a genuine Jaguar complete side of the car including a / b / c posts and cut the sill you need off the bottom. And they're not cheap.

It’s strange how the 2000 vintage Jags divide opinions. I’ve always felt the X was more appealing than the S Type as I find the S Type’s front end ‘gopping’. Post 2004 S Type revisions and interiors are lovely however though quite cramped with the transmission tunnel.
Either way, both models are something of a bargain now particularly for those who appreciate the final incarnation along with the X350 XJ of anything that looks remotely like William Lyons’ original design.
The new generation cars are a step forward for sure but look like anything else on the road.

I had a 55 plate Sport premium estate in 'ultra marine' with 1/2 black leather (*cough* 2.2d but I was doing lots of miles).. I'd always wanted a Jag and finally got enough together to buy one, albeit 12 months old at the time. I really enjoyed it, wafting around and it was a big step up from the Bora I'd had before.

My only problem with it was the ****ing useless dealer who sold me (and fitted) 2 new wheels that were as buckled as the ones I'd broken driving over a house brick. They then proceeded to not to find this out on 3 separate occasions and after I took it somewhere else (who found that the new wheels were bent) blamed me for bending them. Threats of court action against Jaguar eventually got it sorted but it has put me off even thinking about another Jaaaag.

Considered one of these way back, the 3.0 sport in black with red interior. Mate said his grandparents had one put me right off but still think they look look nice

Really like the estate versions of these in cream leather with that spectacular voilet metallic with a 2.2D would do nicely, if we didnt already have enough cars.
They have aged tremendously well and sill look fresh in my eyes. Neat styling, especially considering the other Jags of this era look a bit dated, albeit still desirable..

If that is the turquoise that was also on the list.
Went to the Sweidsh open tennis champs at Bastad (snigger) in about 2004 and these had a big promo parked around, they looked lovely.

The Mondeo was a better drive in every respect, but pipe and slippers man would point to the jaguar badge and be happy enough. I don’t understand the love for modern jaguars, they’re as bland as every other mass produced vehicle. In summary. One for badge snobs and middle management.

Yep - built to a price. I think they are for people who would actually love a BMW. Every Jaguar driver I have ever seen has been a bellend of the highest order. A Grade A bellend if you like. wink

It's just a fact the without the benefit and willingness of migrant workers willing to come and contribute to UK PLC both the private and public sectors would collapse like a wet cardboard box overnight. They aren't bad cars at all, although rot is an issue, and were competitive at the time. My issue with them is the truly dreadful styling, which is awful in basically every way but stands out for the awful detailing. The entire Jaguar output at this time suffered from this issue, from the flabby and poorly detailed XK to the almost unbelievably bad X350.

I'd also say they feel like a nice ordinary car, rather than a scaled down XJ, but that's subjective.

Jaguar Steve is also spot on about the ownership demographic these days. A lot of red faced, daily mail reading UKIPers.

This particular car has clearly been owned by a prat with that spoiler, stupid wind deflector things, and other cosmetic "improvements".

My son's period of ownership of a 2.0l diesel X-Type was an expensive and unhappy one. Remedied by returning to the BMW fold.
