I looked at four 3.0 X-Type estates when I had to replace my 2.5 Outback last year and... bought a 3.0 Outback.

I really wanted to like the Jag, but just couldn't bring myself to part with the moolah. Nothing wrong any of them objectively, but when both nose and gut say, "nah", even for no good reason, you can only walk away.

In fairness to Shed I was operating a few hundred quid above the benchmark, but not by many. The Outback continues to eat bushes for fun in the same way that the X-Type is reputed to, but continues to delight me with its capability and the driving experience it offers where, I fear, the Jag would not.

Still a good shed, mind.

Would the 4.0/4.2 AJ-V8 have fitted transversely? scratchchin An X-Type R could have been fun.
Jaguar were developing a supercharged version of the 3.0, which would presumably have been an 'R'. But as the transfer box was a tad delicate with the 280 NM of torque of the n/a engine, it would have required a fair bit of re-engineering and Ford decided instead to divert money towards developing an estate. Probably a sensible move in the long term, but sad we never saw the S4 rival come to fruition.

The X Type is an unfairly maligned car. Generally by people who have never driven one but read somewhere that it shared some bits with a Mondeo so it must be crap. Mondeos, of course, were not crap and neither is the X Type.

I remember driving a 3.0 manual sport, and being very impressed with it. It had plenty of performance and handled very nicely indeed. The interior was a bit plasticky compared to the German competition, but it drove far better than any Audi of the period.

Seemingly at the time I was alone in rather liking the neat lines with a few overtones from the old Mk 2 Jaguars.
Stupidly in 4 wheel drive Jaguar had no chance competing in the fleet market & of course the merest whiff of that blue collar swear word FORD put the badge snobs off.
Reliability, rust & an accurate judgement as to market needs leaves me unconvinced that Jaguar, sorry Tatra, Tary or whatever the Indian NOT BRITISH company is called, leaves me unconvinced Jaguar have got it right even now.

I borrowed one (a 2.0D, in fairness) for a summer in Vienna. I didn't like it much, I found it really cramped and couldn't get comfortable. The thing I liked even less was that the engine properly shat itself and it was scrapped. No signs of problems, just suddenly it took off on the way to collect the owner from the airport. It then burnt all its oil, billowed smoke and smashed up a conrod or two on the hard shoulder. I had to call my Austrian friend, get him to take the train and then explain what had happened. Luckily he didn't blame me

I admit that the immense engine failure on that car would not apply to this shed

Had mine for 4 years as a daily and it does it's motorway duty very well. Its only required a drop link and egr valve in this time and it turned out that Taunton Jaguar were as cheap as anyone else for these parts. It may not be an exciting drive but there are no creaks or rattles as some have said and the bodywork is as good now as it was 4 years ago with not one spot of rust. The clutch bite is a little low but always has been and the breaks could be better. My weekend toy is a Clio RS 200 but I still like getting back in the Jag for daily and family duty as its so damn effortless.

The only ward in the country to ever elect a UKIP MP to the house of commons is waist deep with tired old X Types.

They'll invariably be polished to absolute perfection but will be sporting a badly fitted aftermarket chrome wheelarch kit to cover up the rust, a wonky second hand leaping cat on the bonnet and at least one Union Jack badge on the back along with a totally legitimate disabled driver badge from ebay

Make of that what you will...
The only reason you even said this was you were hoping to get cuck points off politically correct people.

I guess you are one of those "men" who want to keep allowing immigration until we are outnumbered in our own country (Britain was 20% non white back in 2011 from the census, it will be more like a quarter now, and still letting more in) Do you think China, India, Pakistan, China, etc. are doing this? Man up you little cuck.
Oh do get over yourself please. rolleyes

It's just a fact the without the benefit and willingness of migrant workers willing to come and contribute to UK PLC both the private and public sectors would collapse like a wet cardboard box overnight. I for one welcome it and hope it continues despite the rabid and ignorant narrow minded hostility some of the political spectrum has displayed towards immigration.

If you think somebody purely white and charmingly polite and dressed in a 1950's nurses uniform is going to wipe your arse when you can't do it for yourself anymore you're in for a very big disappointment.

My friend's girlfriend had an X-Type diesel and loved it, unfailingly carted the copiously heavy karaoke gear round and fitted 3 of us in the back and even fully loaded, it was still comfortable.
She bought an Audi A3 for which the same warmth has never existed.

Agree with the other posters that the Mondeo this was 'based' on was a very good car.

Could someone explain what was and wasn't shared between the Mondeo and X-type? Apart from the body and interior, obviously!

VVT I think. Possibly a different exhaust. The guy who fitted my replacement engine reckoned the internals were different too.

PS. Error in the article. The autoboxes on these were Jatco, not ZF.

Said it a lot better than I would have. What a dull place a white England would be. And thank God it never will be a white country.

A Cuck?!! What a loser to use such a word. Think Galley needs to understand how the world works..
