9 years of Land Rover - never again.

4 years with Toyota L/C - I'll never buy anything else again.

Best tow car by far - reliability, durability and no ostentation.

Some posters here should just buy a smart estate - plainly have no real need for a proper 4x4.

What a cool car!

Just a shame about the engine, for the money, you’d at least expect a 400lbft V6 diesel in there, I’ve seen a few facelift Disco’s accelerate and they’re quite nippy on kickdowns, I’d seriously consider a LC if it had a little bit more power given how reliable they are, the depreciation is also minimal compared to rivals, I’d get an all black top spec one on steelies and never wash it biggrin

Can it really only tow 3 (braked) tonnes or is that a typo?

Yes call me old fashioned but to me it looks like a purposeful practical
4x4 and not like a Audi estate that's eaten all the pies like the land rover range and
all the other dreary urban jungle family SUVs ...

Its what i've used in Africa, instead of defenders. It just won't let you down.

In the UK, every time I see one I think of 'old money', you can turn up anywhere in them and not look out of place, from a farmers market to a 5* function. they do seem to have an element of class about them.

Ignoring the above, they wont' leave you stranded in a jungle.

Just got around to persuading self that (after your article) I don't want a Pajero Dakar 4X4....you produce THIS! At least it might be possible to lpg this one (Pajero too small)!! (Whoops!! It's a diesel....)
Nothing like a reliable car in these days of ever more complex (and problem prone) things.
Remember the old 2CV ad that had no features......NOTHING TO GO WRONG! was the slogan.
Pajero's are great, much better on road than other real 4x4s but with plenty enough off road performance other than extreme (which a real LC will docomfortably). love the heavy duty Landcruisers though, just avoid the Prado which is another platform but marketed as LCs in Europe.

Wow, that’s ugly..and slow. I’ll keep my Disco thanks!
If you want pretty maybe keep your Disco. If you want functionality that can go anywhere take the LC - your Disco will just about work on a gravel driveway, not in the desert. That's why you never see Discos or any Land Rover where serious off-road work is required.

Oh really? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AXdcYae0zeY

Lucky for me there aren't many deserts in the UK. Anyway, that doesn't stop the LC being ugly and slow.

If looks and speed are your priority, then why buy a 4x4 at all?

Buy an Allroad Bitdi or a 530d Xdrive.

Isn't world's prettiest 4x4 a bit like world's tallest midget?

If you're towing a dive boat or a horse box what is important is torque and reliability. Discos only tick one of those boxes . . .

There’s some utter crap talked about Landrovers, usually by people who’ve never even been in one. For the past 10 years I’ve owned both a D3 and D4 back to back. Both have been reliable and are without doubt the most practical cars I’ve ever owned.

Relaxing and spacious on long journeys, seat 7 adults in comfort and if you put the seats down it turns into a van. You ca even remap them to 300hp and go hunting warm hatches. Real Swiss Army knife cars.

ETA: One of my brothers and I have 15 years combined of trying to run LR products. Both now in Toyotas. See also J D Power survey - LR regularly in bottom 3 and that is based on ownership.

You can keep posting the same thing as many times as you like, my response will be the same.

I’ve done 200k miles in my Discos and they’ve been fine. So which one of us is right?

Obviously you are right and J D Power are wrong. After all your sample size is massive. . .

I'm very happy that you have had trouble free motoring and hope that you continue to do so. But that was not my experience, nor my brother's.

Sowe are both right.

We will have to see what the new defender is like !! the current range is school run gismo laden crap , the original 4x4 makers don't seem to have put all there eggs in one basket the new JK wrangler looks a great bit of kit and the track hawk is just bonkers , the uk landcruiser looks like the perfect 4x4 for people who need a 4x4 ,,

Ha ha... indeed. Personal experience accounts for fk all. Big data is everything... I work mainly in the Middle East and North Africa and I see lots and lots of Defenders and Discos....oh no wait...I don't...I wonder why...

Except the proper RR, LR make nothing that remotely appeals to me at the moment.

Sure an old Disco may or may not be reliable but given the choice of a new one or the Toyota, I wouldn't give the LR the time of day.
