Who's had the flu this year?
Discussion
I started to feel unwell on Fri and have been bed-ridden ever since. Everything hurts, chills, sore throat and banging headache. Like a massive hangover. Have been working from home/sleeping during the day as I have no energy and getting by on Ibuprofen, Lemsip & paracetamol cocktails. Only problem is these mask the symptoms so come morning I back to where I started - sick as a parrot.
I cannot remember being as ill as this before. Anyone else suffering?

Lemsip contains paracetamol, so you shouldn't take any additional paracetamol tablets. You can take Ibuprofen though, and alternate that with Lemsip every 2 hours.Unfortunately, these products are designed to mask the symptoms, not fight them - you have a virus, and anti-viral medication is very difficult to obtain. Essentially, you need to keep taking the tablets, keep hydrated, and wait for your immune system to do its job.
I had it the last full working week (for me) before Christmas and it knocked me out. I woke up on the Sunday morning with a bit of a cough and a slight tight chest but when I woke up on the Monday for work I did struggle. On that evening I had to take the car to get some work done on it and got a lift home where I fell asleep for two hours while sat up.............which is a position I never sleep in. On the Tuesday I went into work and was told to go home. It wasn't until Christmas eve where I felt semi normal as still had some shopping and wrapping to do.
I felt so weak that going to get water or going to the toilet required holding on to the bannisters and hoping not to fall. I was on the Barrocca, Lemsip and multi-vitamins which took some time to work as I suffered an awful headache for over a week.
Feel better soon OP.

My Daughter works in a Hospital, and amongst the staff that had a flu jab most have been low with a virus - Those that didn't have the flu jab have generally escaped. Small sample, but who knows if the flu jab helps? I know I won't be getting any 'pseudo virus' or whatever it is pumped into my arm - these things can't be tested properly as they bring them out in a rush - Foreign substance injected into the human body, but been tested on rats... That'll be ok then?

The flu jab's effectiveness is different every year. They target what they predict will be the most likely strains over the next winter, but obviously this can be wrong.I work in a hospital as well and I'm led to believe this year's flu jab has been quite successful. I don't know any staff that have come down with it anyway and the number of patients coming in is well down compared to last year. But like you said, this is a small sample so is probably very different depending on where you live.
The sickness some people get after getting the flu jab (I get it every year unfortunately) is the immune system building its response. The 3 days of a blocked nose is nothing compared to full blown flu. I thought like you and turned it down for a few years because I knew it would make me ill, but then after getting flu twice in two years I've changed my perspective on it. I probably should have learnt my lesson after the first time.
Allergic reactions are a risk with any medication, no much how much 'testing' they've done. Everyone's different.
Wife came home with it last Monday , I went down with it a week ago today . Full Monte , head and joint aches , sore throat , sinuses , fever , not wanting to mention draining my self through all orifices , was a fun weekend . Just about back to normal now , can't face a beer yet though .
I had the flu jab this year but got the flu in December - I've had the flu before but never as bad as that. I've had the flu jab almost every year for about 10 years now and this is the first time I've had the flu after being vaccinated. I missed having it about 7-8 years ago and got the flu that year but I didn't feel anything like as bad as I did this time. I do intend getting the flu vaccination again next winter even though I succumbed this time round - sometimes I develop cold like symptoms for a few days after having it but nothing more than that.
I've just had what feels like a very bad cold for a few days - not enough to be full flu but enough to knock the stuffing out of me. Started on Saturday with a sore, scratchy throat. Been on the Lemsip and ibuprofen for the aches, cough syrup for the irritating cough. Hoping to sleep well tonight and get back to work tomorrow.

There's a lot more flu about than we see in actual cases. Around 25% of those infected with with flu show little or no symptoms but can still transmit the infection.
The old wives tale about being laid up for a week in bed if you have flu simply isn't true. If everyone infected with flu was laid up in bed then the infections rates wouldn't be anywhere near as high as they are as most of those able to infect others would be under self-inflicted isolation.
Good luck to all those feeling rough, hope you're feeling better soon.

Slight thread deviation but, always amazes me how many people get a runny nose and a cold and say " I have got Flu " Only had real Flu once, and you certainly know the difference! Now, man flu is of course totally different!
I had a little sore throat, a bit congested, but horrible body aches, head aches, feeling miserable as hell, not sure if that is flu or what. I think it is going now, but then I thought that yesterday when I woke up too..... sitting here with a woolly hat on, in the house. People die from influenza so I guess it is pretty serious in some cases.

It wasn't full-blown flu but it was worse than any cold I've had before.
