I didn't realise they put the V12 65 in these it must be bonkers, I've got a CL65 which with the help of a Quaife can stay on a bit of a straight line under power but in one of these it must be crazy (but fun I bet)

I have a 2016 G63 AMG that I love (less so for longer journeys, but around town it's a hoot). Wouldn't rush to buy the facelift pictured here. The interior is out of keeping with the exterior, and the softening of some of the hard exterior angles doesn't do it any favours to my eye. Maybe it will grow on me but for now, it's a no.
agree love the "current shape" g class, not sure about the interior on this new one though, all the screens seem out of place in a car designed to be a rugged off roader (although most won't go off road). Also not a huge fan of this new style mercedes steering wheel that seems to be making its way into every single model, it just seems way too cluttered with buttons for my liking.

I had a tidy of the garage on Sunday and visited the local tip whereupon I stumbled across a G-Wagen LWB on a "C"-plate. Really took me aback seeing a standard old car, non-AMG, cloth seats, a bit of rust on the bumpers and looking like it has to work for a living.

Now THAT was a cool car IMHO.
Funny you should say that.

Was in my classic G280 a couple of weeks ago in Chislehurst High St and was the sandwich filling in between a 550 Maranello and a Cayman.
A group of teenagers started taking photos of the G, with one stepping out into the road to get a picture square on.
How times change ! eek

Vulgar...?? Really?

Others are complaining that the design hasn't changed?

And it's a lazy argument to claim its only for Oligarchs and Footballer. Of all the owners I know/see, none fit that mould. Most are bought as practical utilitarian cars to sit alongside something more sporty, but by people that want a slightly more luxury interior, but don't want to follow the masses into a Range Rover.

As for more money than sense, £135k for a 600bhp 4x4 isn't exactly Gold-Plated Rolls Royce territory is it?
The original design was a basic military vehicle similar in concept to a Defender; that was practical and utilitarian, not a totally blinged out over-engine/over-wheeled thing with a practical white leather interior for £135k plus no doubt loads of options. Toyota seem to have got it right with the option to buy a basic Landcruiser with steelies. I'd have to question my sanity if I had £135k to spend and it only got me something "utilitarian". Then again it depends on your perception.....

Completely agree on the steering wheel, I don't like it at all. However, this G63, or indeed the current version, is very much on my Lottery win list!

I think you are missing the point and target market....by a country mile. No-one chooses between these and a basic Landcruiser with steelies.

But my assumption is you have no intention of buying said Landcruiser ?

It’s wryly amusing how PHers continually procliam certain cars (usually expensive ones) are “wrong” and yet the manufacturers seem perfectly capable of a) selling them and b)turning a tidy profit on them.

^^^^^ This, 100%. It's almost as if people who can't afford them are jealous of those who can... But of course, I must be wrong - this is PH, a site where one person's motoring integrity is of far more value to any manufacturer than the opinions of those with the actual acumen needed to acquire the offering being made by said manufacturer... wink

Anything above what you can afford is to be deemed 'tat' and 'worthy for Oligarchs, Footballers (sorry, 'Footballists' rolleyes ) and Arabs' who have 'more money than sense'.

Its all written in the PH T&Cs, haven't you read? wink

Yes, a good move by Mercedes - modernise it just enough that it is a little more relevant to the needs of the wealthy, while still retaining enough of its utilitarian credibility. The high price is not a disincentive, on the contrary it has to be expensive enough that ownership is perceived to make a statement about the owners status in life - a bit like purchasing and wearing a Rolex watch.

Encouraging to see that the owners of the previous model don't feel too disenchanted with the introduction of the new version. Not that I'm in the market for one, but I think it would be the new version for me.

Putting glitter on an already very glittery turd.

When will the vulgarity end?

I remember when the G-Wagen was cool, this is just nasty.
Vulgar - lacking sophistication or good taste.

A workhorse, fit for purpose being used as intended.

Nothing wrong with that whatsoever.

Nice try.
laugh I'm with Tuvra on this. The front end of that truck, as photographed, appears rather bling-tastic -- whether on road or off.

Just how "deployable" is the power ? Just how tied down does the chassis feel at speed ? I think the closest I have driven to this was a Shogun and it struggled with much less power.

+1

And not for me.

This vehicle is first and foremost a Veblen good -- and is purchased for its external value. It is only secondarily a form of transportation.
