Toyota teases new Supra (again)

Lone image reveals new details of a 'modern racing concept' lined up for the Geneva show

Opponents of shadowy teaser images look away now, Toyota has released another glimpse of its long awaited Supra successor, and it's about as murky as these things get. The bulbous ducktail and double-bubble roof previously seen in spy shots are both evident here, although a couple of new features are also apparent.

The rear haunches appear considerably more defined than in previous pictures, closer to those on the FT-1 concept, with a sharper transition into the roof resulting in a more purposful stance than the previously chunky design.

There's also a bloody great wing on the back, perhaps hinting at a more track-orientated variant. As we already have confirmation that the Supra will be sold in four trim levels under the Gazoo banner, a bewinged range-topping Supra GRMN isn't too great a stretch.

The new Supra is expected to be sold in coupe form only, alongside the convertible-only BMW Z4/5 with which it shares a platform. Petrol and hybrid powertrains have been mooted, although whichever trim level and engine combination you spec, an automatic gearbox is believed to be the only transmission option.

Whatever final form the finished car takes, we'll have a little longer to wait: Toyota's pronounced "commitment to bringing its most iconic sports car back to the market" doesn't appear to be contingent on timeliness - the official unveil isn't expected now until early next year.

I like to try different cars/brands, so get the price-point right and this really could be my next car...if it looks the part, of course!

ETA - image of potential looks...we can only hope!

Teases? Is PH turning into a motorised version of the daily fail? What next, bikini body pics of editorial contributors? hehe

Cue massive disappointment from everyone when they announce after two years build up that it'll be over £100k.

I am totally with you...but I can't help feeling that this may be yet another 'bait and switch' by the rumour mill/teaser factory. Looking at the camo'd mule, it looks a VERY long way from the car we both like in other guesswork imagery.

Err, no, Let's read that release again shall we? http://newsroom.toyota.eu/the-legend-returns/

"At 2018 Geneva Motor Show, a modern racing concept signals Toyota’s commitment to bring back to the market its most iconic sports car."

This shot is of a racing concept which will presumably be used for GT racing or something as publicity for the new car but is unlikely to be sold to the public? I guess does that count as a variant? *shrug*

Disappointingly so.

All these concept predictions that come out for various cars, really feel like the old Bullseye "Here's what you could have won..." scenario.

And whilst I know that it's not always the fault of the manufacturers (although in this case Toyota themselves bait us with things like the FT-1), they don't make life any easier for themselves with stupid teaser images and hints that things could almost be like the amazing concept we've already seen....could it...could it really? Well, no. It's going to look worse.

It's not always bad - just not as good as we had hoped.

Just thought of the perfect analogy - imagine finding out you were about to hook up with a Minogue sister....you get all the teasers..."It's a Minogue!"..."She's had hit singles!!"...oooo come on Kylie....then you find out it's Dani. I mean, yeah that's all great and stuff and who could argue with hooking up with Dani?? But I'd still be a little pissed that it wasn't Kylie.

Have the following been confirmed for this car yet?

Engine options, gearbox, differential, drive-train, price range.

It's about 5 years overdue and as someone else said, the no doubt 6 figure price tag will leave people reeling. It's not even out yet and I'm bored of it already.

Shame as the mkIV Supra was one of the most iconic cars Toyota have made IMO.

Looking like an overweight blob never did GT-R sales any harm sales wise so could do here too.
Luckily it didn't drive like an overweight blob either.

The looks grew on me too, eventually, however, here's hoping it looks something like the various concepts which looked frankly... amazing.

Will the Toyota be more expensive than the Lexus LC? I can't see that happening as Lexus is meant to be Toyota's luxury brand. The Lexus starts at about £74k.

I'd put the top of the range of the Supra at about £60k before options, base starting at about £40k depending on if it came with something arthritic in the engine bay.

It'll need to be priced to compete with the Cayman and Boxster and preferably be cheaper for the same spec as otherwise it'll be competing on badge (it'll lose for most buyers), or ability, which isn't a good place to be in when your competition in the Boxster or Cayman.

The idea, as I'm lead to believe, is that it will fill a market gap between the current 'GT' cars with little power, style or substance, and the big GT cars with big everything.

Problem though, is that it will still be way too expensive for the type of buyer it is aimed at.
(Much like the MkIV when it came out)

I think it's more likely this will be Toyota's halo car trying to take on the 911 and the GTR, both of which are £80k plus cars now. I very much doubt it will aiming to take on the Cayman so it doesn't really matter if it's not badged as a Lexus.

Honda did the same with their new NSX and Nissan have slowly but surely moved the GTR up several price brackets since it's release. It will probably be jam packed with all the latest tech Toyota can throw at it to try to take those other cars on which means if this is less than 6 figures, I'll be VERY surprised. A £40-£60k Supra in this day and age is wishful thinking IMO.

Indeed - one of the reasons I find these "teasers" counter-productive and therefore annoying.

The prototype seems to resemble a taller, dumpier 86, rather than some sort of Japan-GT killing-machine.

If they did that, who would buy the Lexus LC if its outclassed by the Supra? Would see a silly move to have green lit the LC if they were going to superseded it so soon.

I know BMW have stopped production of the 6 series but this doesn't seem to fit the same segment as this joint project with Toyota has billed the BMW half as a Z4 replacement not a 6 series replacement? The current Z4 is closer to a Boxster than a 911 cab.

Hmmm I hadn't considered the Z4\Z5 joint platform angle. How big is this car going to be?

I just can't see them creating so much hype and using such an iconic name to make a mid tier sports car, it would effectively be one rung up from the GT86!

That is exactly where I see it, with the LC above it, which makes far more sense to me.

From that picture the rear seats look about as useless as the LCs and nowhere near as practical as a 911.

Here is the official BMW concept photo:

looks quite small to me.

Yes it does look small. The only issue for me is that the original Supra was what £40k plus back when that was a lot of money and it was the top of the Toyota sports car tree at the time. I just can't see them pitching the new replacement at the lower mid tier £50-60k bracket but who knows.

If it's built with the Z4 on the same platform it's going to be in the £30-50k, maybe push that up a little as it's a new model but realistically the platform isn't going to offer a model with a base price much over £60k.

So, with a manual or dual clutch I'll be very interested. If it's auto only for the top engine, forget it.
