I loved mine (had £12k of extras as it was the dealer demo!) but as many have said it's an all rounder not an out an out pure drivers car. For doing everything pretty well without costing the earth it was awesome. Mapped to 240 (no doubt like a lot) it was swift and it handled quite well (steering has better feedback than my current M135). Was spacious inside and good quality fabrics, half decent stereo too.

I would love a PIRELLI version with the funky tyre tread seats and Pirelli alloys. But there are only 150 of those

All this really enforces is how much better then Mk5 holds its value than the the Octavia vRS and Leon FR, both of which are basically identical to it.

A 2007/57 reg Octavia with similar mileage is £2,880 from a dealer.
A 2007/07 Leon FR with similar mileage is about the same.

this car needs new headlights. That's at least 300 off right there.

As someone pointed out above, you can get a Golf for ~£3k too. This one is expensive.

I wouldn't say expensive. You can get them sub 3k but you really wouldn't want one. Not the majority of the ones that i've seen, anyway.

4k should get you a tidy example and is probably bang on the money. I'd say it's worth spending the extra dosh and bag yourself a good one.

I had a fully loaded (Leather, Sat Nav, sunroof, 18's, multifunction wheel etc) 2006 car back in 2011. Very comfortable and nice inside as I recall but really dull to drive...I sold it in 2012 after only 6 months...incredibly managed to sell my 60K miles example and buy a 2005 50K miles E46 M3 for only £1K more.....how times have changed! :-)

Why does it need new headlights?

+1

It needs a £15 headlight restorer kit applied and 30 mins effort.

I've been looking at these recently, as I'm after a new daily driver somewhere between £4000 and £8000.
I did quite like these when new, and appreciate how much better they were than the Mk4.

However as stated above, I don't actually think these represent good value and the ones on the market appear to be quite expensive compared to their Octavia and Leon cousins - both of which have a 'USP' whereas the Golf just doesn't.

As it is, I am leaning towards its contemporary rival - a Civic Type-R. There are many reasons NOT to buy a Civic, but equally, as per the review in a recent issue of modern classics, it makes the Golf look as exciting as dishwater. Pound for pound, you also get more kit, less miles.

I reckon if you fancy one of the VAG cars, the Octavia (for space, and value), or the Leon ( for better colours, rarity) both seem to give more reasons to buy but with nearly all the same positive qualities of the Golf.

Great all rounders, considered one but found them a tad dull and poorly spec'd. The Megane is fragile but great fun. In the end I got a 2010 ST, it's great fun, well equipped and been reliable so far, it also makes noises that make my manhood twitch, especially when it's hot and the exhaust pops during gear changes.

Indeed. Nothing like overreacting.

Did these 3 cost the same new?

Well yes, but he presumably picked the cheapest Octavia and Leon of similar mileage he could find so it's only fair to compare it to the cheapest Golf. smile

After looking at his examples, they're just not comparable. The Leon and the Octavia look pretty decent picks for the money, surprisingly. Wasn't expecting that, if i'm honest.

Sub 3k Golf GTI's have alot more mileage than those and generally look more tired and less cared for:

There’s no better way to say, I’ve absolutely no imagination and I don’t like excitement...
Not driven one then? We have one, great car, especially for £4-5k!
Add a remap for £300 and it'll see off most challengers!
I had one for 3 years and 50k, remapped for most of it, Great car when new and I've no doubt they still are today. Yes, they're no R26R but they weren't intended to be and they are still more than capable of an exciting drive. I'm not sure how anyone could claim otherwise.
I completely agree. I owned one for 18 months.

They drive very nicely and if you did want to modify it , the amount of performance parts available and their relative low cost is also excellent. :-)

My friend bought a 120k DSG model, with Xenons, needed a wheel bearing , aside from that, is spot on - it cost £2200.
Bargains are there if you look around.

How is the ride quality in these?

Suitable for a B & C road commute of 20miles with a few speed bump ridden villages thrown in?

I expect it will be better than my current 2011 Leon FR.

Exactly what my commute was. It was fine for that and it's fine on a motorway.

I don't think they were massively different.
