Well that didn't take long hehe

Ah, the Pistonheads Mantra; won't even test drive it if it'd lose a game of Top Trumps.
I think it's more like "won't even test drive a car that is perceived as being fast when it's actually not".

I’m in shock. Toyota design yet another ugly car.

Looks might not matter if you’re after a reliable family car like a camary but they sure do if you’re spending 50k on a sports car.

I don’t get it. Toyota (and Lexus) seem incapable of designing anything pretty nowadays. Mind you the same could be said of BMW...

It's suffered the same fate as the GT86 where the concept looked incredible, but got ruined by the engineers and financiers. I can't say I'm surprised....

That behind looks like a combination between the new Vantage & Griffith!

340bhp and 3.5s to Sixty seems unlikely.

I would suggest the output will be closer to 400bhp which coupled with a auto box will get to the figures they are proposing.
400bhp & 1500kg RWD will still be going some to break 4 secs.

There's a huge disproportion between the size of the wheels and the glass area.

If that's the 'wet' weight with a dual clutch, it's achievable; tech is constantly advancing.

Won't be through driver skill though.....point and squirt.

I'll wait until there's something official from Toyota before getting too excited either way about this. At the moment it looks suspiciously like a magazine making stuff up. If it was in Auto Express I doubt anybody would trust it further than they could throw the new Supra.

Still ambitious. IF it's as high as near 400bhp and IF its under 1500kg...

Other similarly spec'd cars don't manage it with well over 400bhp....and I can't think of a single sub-400bhp RWD, 1500kg cars that can. Modern tech nor not.

I thought Toyota's problem was the rather lame engines.

Does this use the BMW engine? or their own?

Love it, reminds me of the new TVR
Conversely, it reminds me of the old TVR.

Looking at it, it has all the ingredients to be a really good looking car but as somebody said earlier, it's been so long in the development it's already starting to look dated. It actually makes the GT86 look modern in comparison and that's been around for 6 years.

Hopefully in the flesh, and in a decent colour (not that bland red) it'll look something special but those pictures are certainly not lighting my bonfire....

I'm hoping this won't be like the 4C which looks like it fell out of a happy meal in person.

The original concept for this vehicle was stunning. Someone took these magazine pictures on a potato while holding the mag in one hand and the pages look fresh and curvy. If the proportions are accurate then it's awful.

I'm a bit sceptical about those acceleration figures.

Just to use an example here, a Golf R with 300bhp does 0-60 in about 5 seconds. This new car has only 40bhp more, weighs more than a Golf R, but apparently does the 60 sprint a second quicker? rolleyes

I'm just not quite sure about that!
MK7 Golf R DSG has being independently tested as quick as 4.4s 0-60 I believe.

I had a MK7 Golf R DSG for a few months, with a stage 1 remap 0-60 on vbox was 3.3s and it was running 360HP. DSG and Haldex makes for a very fast combination.

Nice. I'm tempted with a remap on mine. There are some pretty decent mods out there that probably won't kill the engine at reasonable prices.

Best bang for buck is the ECU map and TCU map.

With those alone you can expect:
0-60 with LC: 3.3-3.5s
0-100 with LC: 7.5s
0-60 without LC: 3.9s
0-100 without LC: 8s

1/4 mile with LC: 11.7@120mph
1/4 mile without LC: 12.2@119mph

If you go stage 2, catted downpipe, air box you can gain another 10-20HP but the biggest gains simply come from the maps and are perfectly safe and reliable as the DSG can handle close to 600HP and the engine around 470HP on stock internals.

A hugely capable road car that will leave most cars including supercars for dust on a cold wet British B road, on a track however they are too soft and brakes not upto track work, but as VW intended them as road cars, they are seriously capable. Easily my favourite hot hatch and in my opinion also the most capable on a british road. Of course a Focus RS would own it on a circuit but the Golf would embarrass the RS from a set of traffic lights or in a quarter mile run.
