So how fast can you go for £2k. Just curious.
Discussion
This is not really a "what car should I buy" type thread. It's just out of idle curiosity.
It stems from a conversation I had with my Dad the other night. He has always had a hankering for a V8 powered S type Jag (each to their own). He showed me an ad on AT for a 4.2 version for £1875 and stated that it was a really cheap way of going quite fast.
This got me thinking, could you go any faster for £2K?
Post your ideas with links to examples if you can.
The rules are simple:
No bikes! (turns out you can get surprisingly close to the double ton for a couple of grand if you go for two wheels!)
Bog stock cars only. No buying a cheap turbo for a grand and spending a grand on tuning.
No spending your imaginary £2K on a plane ticket and claiming you can go 583mph!
Let's split answers into two sections, fastest 0-60 and fastest top speed as a high top speed doesn't always equate to the fastest acceleration.

Damn good shout!Running costs/bork factor/insurance costs irrelevant. Its all about the speed.

I wonder how costly an S Type R is to run...
A lot no doubt, but in fairness the sub £2k one the OP referred to is an SE not an R. I'm pretty sure you could get an Impreza that would be quicker 0-60 than the Jag for £2k, but you might struggle to get a bog standard one.

a few older TTs with the 225 engine are under budget - apparently good for 6.4 0-60
I have one, really doesn't feel all that fast but then i have been spoiled by quicker cars in my life. It is however a great all rounder that i use as a daily and winter ski car. nuclear hot heated seats though mmmm toastyDerventio said:

In terms of bang-for-your-buck, though, 300bhp and a 0-60 time of 5.4 seconds for £1,250 is going to be hard to beat.
that volvo is very surprising - i knew the "T-R"'s were quick but i didn't realise they were that quick
another shout for the saabs and only around half the budget. the aero's are in the low 6's to 60 and theoretically in the mid 150 range.
a project/ropey fiat coupe 20VT has similar stats and will be around £2k. they are out there (i just bought one but came complete with niggles)
there's one alfa GTV V6 on the bay of dreams at £1995 - MoT expired but looks like it might scrape another year for little cost
celica vvtl-i looks quick (as opposed to "fast") on paper.
the higher output RX-8, if it'll start, will be well under £2k
