Vectra is too old to even get a look in. Does an insignia even hold a candle to an S4? I'm on about quality, not power.
What a bizarre statement, why would anyone compare a 'white goods' rep mobile with an S4 ?
I think it was with regards to the Insignia VXR, after I suggested it was a nice sports saloon

That's how my 2005 Astra with 131k miles is going. It feels like a car that'll easy do the same mileage again.

Now I think it'll be run into the ground - I don't really want to change it and since it's nearly worthless, there's no depreciation to happen
Precisely. I plan to run mine to 200k, then see. And I know it will cost peanuts to keep it running till then (relative) to owning a newer, more prestigious car.
There is no depreciation, and before anyone harps on about reliability, its been turn key go for 2 years in all conditions and I've seen much newer stuff on the hard shoulder many times over. If it breaks, I'll fix it for peanuts.

Similar for me.

I'll answer the original question by talking about my Astra:

Cheap, good looking, petrol 2.0 litre turbo engine and six speed gearbox. And it has been no hassle for the nearly three years I've had it

S4s are a classic example of dreary overpriced Audis.

But an S4 is just a slightly faster rep mobile.

In power & handling the Insignia & S4 are very similar interior wise the dash etc are nicer in the Audi, seating wise both have great seats.

The thing is you get a newer Insignia with less miles on the clock at which point for me things swing in the Vauxhalls favour, of course that depends on if you can live with the dash.

I find the interiors much nicer in the German equivalents, and that's what ultimately swings it for me.
Others will will only see it from the outside, but I'm the one driving it.
The s4 was quite tasty with half leather/alcantara electric recaro's and carbon all over the place. The quality of the materials used are generally nicer than a vauxhall, and the overall design is much better.

I’ve always thought the Insignia VXR is a good looking car. If it had 500hp with 4wd, it would be a weapon.

Never understood why Ford and Vauxhall don’t make higher power models to compete with Audi RS level cars.

I think you'll struggle to find a more German car than an Insignia - an Opel built and engineered in Ruesselsheim

Agree. But what do you think of the S4's steering, damping, chassis and you know, stuff that matters when you drive the thing as opposed to just sit in it?

Though I must admit, I do find a nice set of Recaros great when waiting in a car park for the missus to pick up some mushrooms.

Judging by reviews, they were pretty good. VXRs are hardly the last word in handling dynamics either

I miss this car which I sold about a year ago. It looked like a diesel taxi apart from having two exhausts and enormous brakes that the wheels barely cleared.

Also the noise wasn’t much like a diesel taxi smile

I would rather a Vauxhall over the equivalent Audi. No contest.
+1. Audi and BMW used to be a rarer sight on UK roads than Ford and Vauxhall, now it's the other way round. If anyone thinks the quality of the modern German brands is better then they are deluded. They are all built to the same standard, using the same techniques, they are just priced differently.
This is very true. The Germans nowadays are lifestyle brands. In the days of E30's and W124's anyone would be absolutely correct in calling the German brands premium. The 'quality' of modern Germans is little more than perceived quality, the surfaces you touch, the sparkly bling, but scratch the surface and the standard offered is no higher than the mainstream.

Go on then, elaborate on why the Germans are built to a higher standard than the mainstream.

We had not one warranty claim on our 2015 Insignia, now just out of warranty. A close friend of mine had 11 on his brand new E46 M3 some years ago, numerous on his A5, and a borked engine on his 997 C2.

Oh, and edit to add. My company restores leather. There is a product known as bonded leather. Essentially it's scraps of leather mixed with PU, rolled on to a cotton or paper backing. It is a cheapskate cost saving product, which has a typical life of 4 years.

The worst offenders for using the stuff, that shall be BMW and Merc.

Why ditch Viva?
Vauxhall then wouldn't have an A-segment car (Adam is closer to B-segment; built on Corsa platform).

Bmw and audis are really good cars, just because you are a hater doesnt really change that. I too hate a bit but the car is just a bit of metal

You've misconstrued my statement. I don't hate BMW, Audi or anything German. I love a lot that they make. I would love an M3, an Up Gti, or an R8. I have come close to buying a second gen S8 (2005 ? onwards) more than once.
I was trying to steer Sarah to get an E90 320d M sport for around £10K, but the Insignia was a better deal, it can't be denied. 21k miles and 18 months old for the same money as a 6 year old 50-60k miler BM.

What I don't accept is that they are 'premium' any longer.

I drive police cars. We spank the tits off them.

We used to have Vauxhalls. They felt downmarket but drove well and didn't go wrong much.

Then we had Beemers. They felt posh but broke down a lot.

We went back to Vauxhalls. They still felt downmarket but drove well and didn't go wrong much.

Then we had Skodas. They also broke down a lot.

So we went back to Vauxhalls, again.

They just work.
