1998 Range Rover on air suspension
1998 Jaguar XJ8

I recall 2006 Ford Mondeo on 16" steel wheels was a nice ride if agricultural in the engine department.

I need to try out a lot more cars but for me it has been my shed E39 BMW 530i comfort spec auto. Smooth as silk engine and automatic and despite a couple of bushings past their best causing a shimmy under braking at 60-70 mph, there are no rattles and it virtually glides over everything without feeling wobbly or unstable.

I would love to try a Lexus LS400 or 430 though to see how it compares. Or maybe a S-Class.

Of the cars I have owned my Volkswagen cc is exceptional have often driven over 1400 km in one day in it and always arrive as fresh as when I left. The ventilated seats (especially when driving on over 40 degree C days) and massage function do help. Of the cars my Dad has owned the 1993 Audi 100 was the best, closely followed by a late 1980's Ford Sierra and a 1978 Toyota Cressida.

The theme running through the thread seems to be that (mostly) cars with large sidewalls ride rather well and hardly any cars from the last 10 years feature. Funny that.

The most comfy car I've owned was a Jaguar XJ X350 - lovely thing to tool up a motorway in.

The most comfy car I've ever been is was a Rolls-Royce Phantom. Utterly sublime.

I will second this, especially with comfort seats.

You'll never believe this. But I had a laguna estate (the sporty version) and drove around Europe in it. Really, was the most comfortable driving position and seat I have ever had!!! I know!! I know!!
I believe you.

See my post above. In fact, having produced a spreadsheet of all the cars I have owned, I was surprised to see Renault appear more often than almost any other make.

When I saw the thread title I immediately thought of my old w220 s500, I sold mine at 17years old and it was still fantastic. It seemed to stop the centrifugal forces of cornering from affecting anything in the cab, excellent seats, along with an engine that never had to be pushed hard for speed. Sadly once it was over 210k miles its hard to keep justifying repairs to a car that's virtually worthless.

Everyone will be comfy in different cars, because we all have a different frame and posture.

But a good start, is a car that hasn't been anywhere near the fking Nurburgring.

S60 seats are nice. Audi A8 are also nice, helped by the air suspension.

The most comfortable as a passenger is probably a newish S Class a few years ago, but it didn't stand out because the driver was absolutely awful. A 1950s Rolls I rode in once was jolly comfy too! smile

The most comfortable driving position is my Formula Renault, but of course as soon as you start the solidly mounted engine right behind your back it ceases to be comfortable!

Of the cars I've owned best at soaking up the bumps was the 1986 Citroen BX I had as my first car in the early-90s. When I say "soaking up" I mean couldn't even feel they were there.

Most comfy seats, soooo much better than in anything else I've owned or been driven in, and pretty good ride as well, was the 10 yr old NG Saab 900 I had in the late 00s

The Jag XJ has cropped up in this thread a lot. When the original XJ6 was launched in 1968 it was noted for its 'low profile' tyres...which were 205/75-15s! The fact that the profile was less than the width by any amount was very unusual for the time. Now you get off-roaders with thinner rubber than that!

1996 A8 4.0 Quattro. Was a mega car for £800.
Do you mean 4.2? There wasn't a 4 litre option in the D2 chassis. Either way I agree, sublimely comfy - as all my passengers tend to say!

The two cars I've owned that stand out for me are both the Rover 75 & Volvo V70.

The Rover is a lovely place to sit, however the interior perhaps isn't roomy enough / substantial enough to feel completely 'looked after'.

The Volvo, despite the interior not being as aesthetically pleasing as the Rover's, is comfier. The seats are fab, and you feel cocooned and it is supremely comfortable. If only the Volvo had a similarly compliant suspension to the Rover...
