I had an XT. The most fun car I ever owned. The gearchange was sweet, the 4wd system was just awesome. It would lean a little in a tight corner, but then adopt the same position right the way around the bend and just spit you out the other side. On loose surface you could get the tail sliding too. Very adjustable.

The only downsides were 24-26mpg and excessive wind noise from those pillar-less doors. Oh yeah, and motor tax (in Ireland) of €750 a year.

Nice gaff - bet that costs a bit to heat
Gothic Temple at Stowe.

You can stay there for a weekend. It is AMAZING. We got very lucky to see it in snow, it dropped overnight and we woke up to it on Sunday morning.

I had an old Forester as a tow car, rust was the killer on that one just as it looks like it'll be the killer on this one.

Fun, but parts are often expensive (certainly dealer only parts) and that rust......

I recognise it now - its in Stowe Gardens, near Stowe School, I visited there one of the times I went to the Porsche Experience at Silverstone.

I stayed with the Landmark Trust well over 10 years ago - do the still have the no TV policy?

This one is a dog. You'd be far better spending the money required to fix it on the purchase price of another. And unless you really need the ground clearance, I struggle to see the case for the Forester over an Impreza Wagon, considering they share the same floorpan and many of the mechanicals (and in lesser tune in the Forester). Do the XT's come with diff-locks, making them more offroad than on?

My son had one for a while. Loved it but I was put off by the way that you had to practically dismantle the front end to change a bulb!

The 2004-2009 2.5 XT look like fantastic Q-cars in standard form especially in Green or Gold. Very unsuspecting and with it sharing an engine with the Impreza WRX there is plenty of scope to make it go even quicker and surprise a few people.

Something like this

I bought a 2.0 XT Forester in October last year for £900. Done 3K miles in it with no issues. Lovely drive, unassuming and classless. Previous SF Forester bought for a grand did 25K in it with only a wheel bearing needing done, until a lorry destroyed it on the M1. Great cars have their foibles and issues like anything else. Seem to be good value against more common stuff.

Miata Is Always The Answer

but

Forester, On Reflection, Excels Subtly, Tackles Every Requirement.

(This took me longer than I care to admit.)

Had one of these a few years ago. Great in the snow, and the engine sounds good when you put your foot down. Very practical, lots of traction, cool pillarless doors, nice driving position and great stealth appeal. The only downside I found was the woeful 26mpg. Still, for the size of car and performance, it was just about bearable. Personally, however, I'd pay a bit more a get the later 2.5 turbo with the Prodrive Performance Pack and heated leather. Not many around but well worth seeking out.

There's plenty of these around in better nick than this one. Great cars - I have 2, a non-turbo bought new in '98 still going strong with no serious rust, and an '06 2.5XT with Prodrive pack, which is ludicrously fast, but looks like a farmer's car. There's nothing else quite like a Forester.

Had a couple of the SF model Turbo S’s, one standard and one remapped.
Not bad things although the standard one had started to drag its butt like n itchy dog.
Amazingly competent, especially with a set of Bridgestone Blizzaks on when it snowed.
As for this one? As others say, I’d pass, too many things that caused worry recently, and potentially a moneypit in the immediate future. Too many questions that would need answering and I’m not convinced that I would like the answers anyway.
But damnit, you’ve started me thinking about an STi. Again....

Have you seen the price of a half straight Wagon these days?

I sold my much nicer, much cleaner, much faster 2.5 XTe a year ago for £1,800. I'm struggling to see the appeal of this specific one but, generally, it was an immense car.

I'd spend more for one one that was a bit less tired.

Is it a quiet day on here or is there not much to say about this shed?! I'm sure these threads usually stimulate more discussion! It's an interesting shed, although the top trumps stats looks on the low side. The 2.5 which replaced it seems to give more bang for your buck. Still, it's surprising what's about for shed money (or a little more).

I've always loved the STi versions of these (and that grey one above is a beauty) but the prices less so!

I'd say a well sorted impreza wagon would be remarkably good value...
