Were you driving on your own car policy, which allows you to drive other vehicles?

I may be wrong, but for the insurance to apply I thought the car you drive has to have existing cover? Or did I imagine that?
You didn't, but the OP wasn't driving.
And it varies depending on insurance...
most DOC (3rd party) requires the other car to be insured...
some DOC (fully comp.) doesn't - so my insurance allows me to drive any vehicle with the owner's permission, and doesn't require that it should be otherwise insured...
That is complete and utter rubbish.

DOC cover depends on insurer. Some require the other car to be insured for the DOC to be valid (Admiral for example). Some don’t require the car to be insured already (Direct Line, LV for example).

Having not bought TPF&T cover for many years I don’t know if insurers even offer DOC with that level of cover. If they do, the rules will be the same as for their F.C. policies.

The only way to be certain isn’t to look at your policy booklet and certificate, as there’s is little consistency in the market around this cover.

It’s completely irrelevant to the OP anyway as he wasn’t driving.
