PH says my car is crap - I don't care thread
Discussion
2007 Renault Megane 1.5 DCi purchased 12 months ago from eBay for £1200. 14300 miles later and not a single issue.
Try leaving something nice at the airport and coming back to find nothing parked next to you.
£30 road tax, 60MPG without really trying although I have seen
Occasionally have a read of the cheap lease thread, get excited about a new car and then work out how many thousands of pounds a year more it is going to cost and think whats the point.

yeah i do the same thing. I'll keep looking but until my old shed actually goes pop I'm too tight to spend any money. Do these have a dpf? Try leaving something nice at the airport and coming back to find nothing parked next to you.

I borrowed this car when I first moved to Mexico and hated it. Same 2.4 engine as you get in the PT Cruiser, CVT auto box, spectacularly uneconomical for a 4cyl and not very quick either.
However, we needed a shed and I was offered it for half market price from the previous owners who’d had it since new, so I decided to go for it. Spent £500 on new tyres, fixing an AC leak, and a few suspension bits and it’s been faultless for 20k miles so far.
I actually quite like it now All the seats fold flat, you can fit virtually anything inside it, it has 60 profile tyres so shrugs off potholes / kerbs with no issues, and I reckon even if I keep it another 5-10 years I’ll be able to sell it for what I paid for it. GF has also crashed it 3 times and nothing has fallen off, although the paint / panels are looking rather the worse for wear. On the rare occasion I ever take a photo of it, I just move back as far as possible and it looks kind of OK.

Hyundai Ioniq hybrid, anyone?
It's not fast, not glamorous, not remotely exciting to drive, and carries zero badge cachet.
Fantastically fit for purpose though: comfy and relaxing to drive, very practical, kitted out with all manner of toys, sips fuel, and costs next to nothing as a company car.
Plus everybody and their dog at work has a BMW or Audi so, ironically, the Ioniq has exclusivity on its side...

^ I remember one time i parked in dalston (london) near some clubs. there was a smal gap behind my car that was within the desginated parking markings. some knob decided to park their smart-two right behind mine in order to squeeze into the space, leaving me next to no room to come out from the spot. I'd have had to move back and forth hundres of times in order to get out.
thankfully the bar next to where i parked had 4-5 rugby guys on a night out along with myself and my mate. we all managed to lift/heave that smart-fortwo back enough (it still had the handbrake on) for us to have enough room and drive off, each of us lifting from the wheel arch. those rugby guys were a great sport and no harm came to the car. was a great feat.

I'm going to add my (former) track car, the 206 GTi. As soon as one of these pops into conversation on PH the comparisons start with the Clio 172 and the 205 GTi (for different reasons), and it naturally doesn't look favourably on the poor old 206.
All of that aside, the Peugeot was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to buy and run than either of those two, and was an absolute hoot to drive on track with a couple of choice mods and sticky tyres. For all of the opprobrium, I'd say it was equally as entertaining as my well-sorted mk2 Golf GTi (Konis, ARBs), and a damn sight cheaper to buy and run. It would gladly keep up with MX5s and other hatches on track, but didn't seem to attract the 'trackday scene' tax.
Yes, it's not as good as one of the best, trackable hot-hatches in recent years - but there were things I hated about the Clio 172 (like the seating/wheel position), and the 206 cost around a third of the equivalent Clio.
Yes, it's not as good as Peugeot's talisman hot-hatch - but it cost about 10% of the price without being anything like 10% of the experience, and you can thrash/repair it without really worrying too much.
It's one of those cars which was received underwhelmingly by the motoring press, and the internet hyperbole machine turned it into the worst thing since Saddam Hussein. It's really not as bad as PH would have you believe.

They were pretty much the same price new (which is part of the reason they were not very popular), so I guess you mean secondhand prices? Not a great surprise really, though I suppose that makes it good value as a s/h buy.All of that aside, the Peugeot was SIGNIFICANTLY cheaper to buy and run than either of those two,
Beige Vectra C 1.8 - the only car I've had that's officially described as beige on the log book
Silver Astra G 1.7 CDTI
Silver Astra G 1.6
Grey Omega 2.2 diesel estate
Blue X type 3.0 estate.
All owned at the same time.
Total cost to buy £4575
Total mileage 546348
Owned for 11 years combined
Total mechanical breakdowns 0
Total desirability factor 0 (I hope)

All you folks with " crap ML's, Crap Fiesta's, Crap 120d's etc. THis is a crap car. But currently serves well as a 60 mile a day diesel N/A commuter hack. Has the requisite gaffer tape ( body coloured of course, can't be seen to be council!) that holds the rear arch on to the rest of the body. This year has seen new glow plugs and rear suspension rebuild as rear turret collapsed, other than that it is in fine fettle.
It was a crap car by most peoples standards, but it was good to me and got me around the country.
