I drove one of these but the 238 hp version, felt slow, the auto blip on downshifts was terrible, the steering was poor, the manual box was notchy, didn't feel like a hot hatch, the only thing that was memorable in a pleasant way was the crackles from the exhaust. Probably not fair on the jcw that I had earlier driven an m140i but I just couldn't find any fun in the mini. The final nail in the coffin was the price, the m140i was cheaper.
I think it depends what you want from a car, I find Bmw's feel heavy and are pretty dull to drive unless you're going silly speeds. My Mini Cooper S feels far more alive/lighter in comparison to the lardy beemers.

The Mini is much more fun to drive at lower speeds for me, and you can use all the performance for most of the time, and I enjoy that aspect having been used to much faster cars.

What I do love about Bmw's though is that they do make lovely high speed cruisers, whereas the Mini is very poor in that regard because of the hard/uncomfortable seats and harsh ride.

I got back in my ep3 after the test drive and I can safely say it's a far superior hot hatch, I wanted to like the Mini for the reasons you suggest but I really couldn't find much to like. My wife drives a Clubman SD and I think it's a superior car to the Cooper S JCW and that's with the diesel engine and slushbox.

The ep3 is very highly rated for sure, cool but it wouldn't be for me because I hated my V8 M3 with all the performance at 6k revs plus, and its power delivery drove me mad!

Blimey you must have thought the JCW was bad if you prefer a diesel with a slusher! smile

£2000 for Chill pack !!

I bought a Mazda RX8 With new engine, 230 hp, great driving dynamics AND Heated seats for a little bit more than that.

£28k with some good options is nuts for a Hatch With 210hp.
