Because buyers prefer larger cars. Duh!
If you had said buyers prefer safe cars I would have agreed with you.
But I don't think people prefer bigger cars per se. Especially as the interior accomodation (what people actually experience) has hardly improved at all.
More external size might appeal to some but for a lot of people the sheer bulk of their own and other cars is more of a nuisance in daily use I would think.

internal size has increased massively, a 2018 Polo has much greater interior space than the first polo.

if modern cars are bulky due to crash/safety regs, then explain the MX5, which conforms to all modern regs, yet it is the same size as it was 30 odd years ago?

Also, why is it than a VW Up can be sold, it is about the same size as a mk1 golf?

Got into an MGBGT the other day.. felt like a sardine.

My kit car is similar... tiny
Really? The front seats are quite roomy. The back are tiny like a GT86.
I'm only 5'11 and I felt squashed in there... Mostly due to the narrowness of the cockpit.

Mk1 MX5:
Width: 65.9 in

Current MX5:
Width: 68.1 in

A Land Rover Defender (Minus wheel arches) is only 66 inches wide.

An MGB GT is only 60 inches wide.

How many people can you get in it nowadays then?

I think we're gonna go into a regeneration phase with the weight of cars, where they will start to get lighter.
Not with EV's on the horizon.
There's still life left in the old girl yet, if you ask me! Mazda are doing some good technological stuff on the ICE, so i think we can try and stretch it out for a little bit longer yet.

EV's will continue to be worked on to meet our demands though. Again, new car size will be a struggle, but i'm sure there will be developments where the weight can be brought down.

unfortunately people have also increased in size smile

the polo is the same size as my MK2 GTi golf

all they have done is raised the size of every model and introduced new smaller cars like the UP to replace the gap created by the up-sizing of the previous small car

I think it has been manufacturer/sales driven not customer driven. Manufacturers want people to keep swapping their old cars for the new model so they make it possible for their salesmen to say "come and try the bigger and "better" latest model" every year. "The same but with slightly different lights" doesn't persuade people as easily as "bigger and better".

UK people have become much fatter, height has gone up a bit, but there have always been some tall men. My Father in law is still 6'3 in his 70s (was 6'4 in his prime, apparently) . He had MGBs in the 1969s and has one now. He fits into it fine.

the new polo is bigger inside than an 80's passat, it is also wider (probably just bigger) inside than a current ford focus

old cars were tiny inside
