Why are current cars so bulky ?

Because buyers prefer larger cars. Duh!
If you had said buyers prefer safe cars I would have agreed with you.But I don't think people prefer bigger cars per se. Especially as the interior accomodation (what people actually experience) has hardly improved at all.
More external size might appeal to some but for a lot of people the sheer bulk of their own and other cars is more of a nuisance in daily use I would think.

if modern cars are bulky due to crash/safety regs, then explain the MX5, which conforms to all modern regs, yet it is the same size as it was 30 odd years ago?
Mk1 MX5:Width: 65.9 in
Current MX5:
Width: 68.1 in
A Land Rover Defender (Minus wheel arches) is only 66 inches wide.
An MGB GT is only 60 inches wide.

I think we're gonna go into a regeneration phase with the weight of cars, where they will start to get lighter.
Not with EV's on the horizon.EV's will continue to be worked on to meet our demands though. Again, new car size will be a struggle, but i'm sure there will be developments where the weight can be brought down.

How many people can you get in it nowadays then?
unfortunately people have also increased in size the polo is the same size as my MK2 GTi golf
all they have done is raised the size of every model and introduced new smaller cars like the UP to replace the gap created by the up-sizing of the previous small car
I think it has been manufacturer/sales driven not customer driven. Manufacturers want people to keep swapping their old cars for the new model so they make it possible for their salesmen to say "come and try the bigger and "better" latest model" every year. "The same but with slightly different lights" doesn't persuade people as easily as "bigger and better".

UK people have become much fatter, height has gone up a bit, but there have always been some tall men. My Father in law is still 6'3 in his 70s (was 6'4 in his prime, apparently) . He had MGBs in the 1969s and has one now. He fits into it fine.herewego said:
