Nice picture. I'd be very interested in reading the article.

I didn't know that BMW beat Mercedes to the V12 game.

I always thought the W140 600SEL was introduced first and BMW responsed with the 750 V12.

Every day is school day I guess.

Amazing engineering.

only because there wasn't a Honda prelude or Bristol in the comparison.

I never understood why people enjoyed reading his pompous and unusual opinions.
Back in the day , he was one of the people that taught me to read . Car magazine had/has some talented writers . Still buying it today after inheriting my brothers back issues from the 70's . Much imitated never bettered .

I seem to be in a minority as this does nothing for me, sorry.

Each to their own.

Me, as an 11 year old, was in completely in love with these things. It would be a very interesting purchase, for sure.

That said, in picture 1 the front wing looks the wrong colour.

Criminally undervalued; can someone explain why a Mercedes 450 SEL 6.9 is worth £35k+ yet the more modern BMW equivalent is worth buttons in comparison?
Ok, the modern cars are laden with electronics that can cost £££ when they go belly up but I’m seriously struggling to see how they are worth so little in real terms...
That Merc is a very special thing.

Absolutely love it. I was working in a dealership when these came out, the M.D. had one as a ‘demonstrator’. An amazing machine back then. If I had the funds and space, I’d have it like a shot even though I have no need for it whatsoever.

Doesn't do anything for me either. Just looks like a fat E34.

I remember that article vividly. He called the Merca 'bookmaker's car for people who know they want a good, big and expensive machine but don't much care how it drives'

My father ran a succession of E32 7 series but always the 730. I loved them. Straight 6 was an absolute peach. There was a local 750 iL that I always wanted a go in.

Fantastic car. Really lovely old Herbert, but for the running costs I'd personally prefer to have a similar age Bentley.

I'm surprised nobody else has yet mentioned the front passenger door doesn't seem to be fitted properly and is a different colour to the rest of the car. A little concerning...

As someone else mentioned this was for sale for less than half the price, Some trader snapped it up and advertised it for double the price immediately.

I guess business is business but I bet the guy who owned it all those years is gutted.

Fabulous car though, takes me back to a time when if you saw someone driving something like this they must be very wealthy.

I used to work on Kerry Packers Polo ground in Sussex as a kid and he used to come up in one of these that looked just like this to speak to us as we were treading divets.

At £3500 that was an epic bargain, less so at that price I feel. Still tempting though.

My Dad had one of these as a child company car (SWB with the cross spoke alloys). Got to drive it as a 17 year-old! Thought it was fab and they still look great.

Just had a work colleague send me the link.

I have a Cirrus Blue 750iL, on an F reg just like this car but with the tan interior.

I can confirm most of what is being said. They are a fabulous thing to drive and the engine is just so creamy smooth it's a real pleasure to sit behind such a well engineered powerplant.

As mentioned earlier BMW beat Mercedes to the V12 super-saloon all be it that the 600SEL was quite a bit more powerful.

Nevertheless you are never short of power and torque in one of these cars, it just piles on speed from very low revs.

I also think the shape was so 'right' from the get go.

If you want to know what the E32 750iL is like in a modern world compared to say an M760Li my car was in BMW CAR magazine a month or two back comparing the V12s.

My grandfather had one of these from new. Got rid of it after a year as it was woefully unreliable.

Nice machine. From the days when top spec cars didn't have to shout about it.
The V12 was a great engine, my Grandad had the same unit in an 850i, but imagine what the V16 in the 767i would have been like!

I also remember bits of it t too 'Mercedes front seats designed for Germans with massive backsides' written below picture of said seats.

I also remember reference to the BMW's 'optIonal buffalo hide' which I see is referenced in this article too.
