Pretty much every car under a grand that I have seen for sale , and then investigated further, has had some sort of rust mentioned on the MOT history.
You’re looking at the wrong cars then. It’s not 1980.

thats the issue, whos going to spend £300 to fit a towbar to something so odd, not an issue for a focus, if the car dies you just take it off and fit it to another.

realised i forgot the first part of the story

My dad in his wisdom tried to drive is V50 through a ford to clean the underside, it died. All working except the seatbelt pretensioning/airbag system which hes thrown £500 at with a local auto electrician. MOT has now expired and wont pass with the fault so hes on the lookout for something big enough to sleep in overnight and tow his caravan.

Problem is hes so far killed a megane scenic and a V50 through abuse so both Renault and Volvo are clearly rubbish rofl

no point him spending any more money as the abuse would just cost more in repairs.

I've shown him that grand voyager......
The towing part with the Grand Voyager might be troublesome, can only pull upto 1600KG

the plated max weight for the van is only something like 1450kg and his glider significantly less

That would be fine as I understand, it's the the floor plan strength that means its so low on the Grand Voyager, having driven it the power of the 3.3 V6 would def pull more

Not enjoying shedding today. Front discs and pads and a rear caliper etc. going on today. Needs new tyres soon too.

I probably should have just moved it on but if I get another 12 months out of it then the bill won't seem so bad I guess.

Indeed. It's difficult to know when to continue and when to get rid.

100%

Decision made easier by the fact I need a car by tomorrow. Perhaps I should have 2 cars, one as a spare...

The gearboxes have a reputation for weakness too

Having a car sat idle and living right by the sea isn't a good combination though.

For shedding, when I'm paying more than 50% of the price I'd pay for the next car. So broadly speaking if a bill would cost more than £500-600 then I'd consider binning it. I guess it really depends on what else needs fixing that isn't far away.

No idea what I'll be paying for the next car to be honest. I tend to go on the current value of the car. I reckon I've just spent out about 50% of the car's value which is dangerous territory.

All consumables though so who us to say its replacement wouldn't need similar in the not too distant future.

Yeah, it's not an exact science.

Multi CD player looks like. Must have been an expensive option at the time but maybe it’s an aftermarket one.

Looking at mot history needs some work on brakes but given it’s done no miles almost for years that’s hardly a surprise.

I did think the sills look dodgy but no mention of rust on the history

I like that a lot. My mate has one quite recently with only about 35k miles and the front suspension turrets were looking pretty rusty. I think it would’ve lasted a couple of years but not much more. It was written off when parked at the bottom of a hill and another parked car rolled down the hill and hit it, so we didn’t get to find out
