I had someone like you recently when selling an Impreza for £650 with 6 weeks MOT left, it was described accurately, clearly stated it had a short mot and needed work. This guy wanted me to do the same thing as you are requesting and tried to make out he was doing me a favour - all over email without ever seeing the car.
I sold it 3hrs later for full asking to someone who actually came to see it
That’s the problem selling at sub £1k, people expect to low ball you on an already low price, want the earth without even physically seeing the car. So many time wasters, but luckily you can filter out most and find the reasonable ones

The fastest way to filter out the time wasters is to insist on phone calls only - that loses 90% of them
Good article on an old 75. Can't say I would of gone to the trouble to fix it myself. https://www.autocar.co.uk/car-news/features/rovers...
Currently fishing in these waters, for a small-ish auto for my daughter to learn in.
She's been learning in our old manual Aygo, but she has Asperger's, and we're having to admit that all the things you need to do in a manual coming up to a junction, for instance, is simply overwhelming her mental processing, so we're going to try her on auto to remove a lot of the load.
She'll be buying it herself, and is suffering from not being able to drive (or even go sit in at traders, given lockdown) what she is interested in so we're mainly just looking at adverts a lot... only car we've been to see is a private-seller Jazz, which seemed tidy but really struggled to get from 60 to 70; she wasn't fussed about it one way or the other... and I've had a CVT in an Audi before, which killed it, so I'm super cautious of them!
Any pointers as to really good buys in this category, and anything to run like whatsit from?
Up to 1.4 - 1.6 possible insurance-wise so maybe Civic/Corolla/Focus but generally smaller the better - usual learner/first car fodder.

My best friend is currently teaching his Australian GF to drive and she has no interests in a manual car which makes sense as they won't exist in 10years. He recently got her a tidy little 07 Nissan Micra for £1800 with an auto for really cheap and hasn't had any issues with it at all.
An alternative option they looked at is the Toyota Aygo.
Unless you want sky high insurance costs you sort of need to go the small city cars or low powered superminis with 70bhp. My 22 year old fiancée passed there in October and she is on a Corsa D 1.2L with 70bhp and even being a nurse her insurance is over £1600.
Sometimes insurance can be funny as well where it will be a few hundred pound cheaper a year to insure a newer model car.
A lot of new drivers seem to just share their parents cars as a secondary driver for a few years to keep insurance costs down.

Had 01/02/03/04 plate 1.6 Civic auto, 1.3 Yaris auto and 1.2 Micra auto a fair few times as hire cars when I use to fly more for work. Would always book a small auto as it was just simpler on getting to the other side esp as a lot of clients were in city centres so didn't want to be parking anything too large or bothering with gears in strange city road networksShe's been learning in our old manual Aygo, but she has Asperger's, and we're having to admit that all the things you need to do in a manual coming up to a junction, for instance, is simply overwhelming her mental processing, so we're going to try her on auto to remove a lot of the load.

Nice enough for what they were, bit gutless at the top ends but perfectly fine for a first car etc
Civic might be a good shout if its the version where the selector is up on the dash, everything is up on her kind of eyeline level then and the controls are really simply laid out for lights and wipers etc etc

We've been doing meerkat quotes with her details as if she's just passed her test - a 1.6 Civic I saw advertised came in at just under £1200; our old Aygo would be just under a grand on the same basis, so not ridiculous. The cheapest I've quoted for so far is a Smart Fortwo at about £750... she has liked those for years, right up until it's time to actually think about buying one and now she's not so sure Sahjahd said:
My first time on this thread, just out of interest. Surely almost anything with a reasonable prospect of giving a year of service is worth a minimum of £1k now? This BMW is tidy enough not to be an embarrassment anywhere, the MOT history is fair enough for its age, and it hasn't even been attacked by chavs with dark tints and M badges. If I needed a cheap car, I would definitely look at this.
BMW's are no good when old, too many things go wrong and repairs are expensive.defblade said:

I wouldn't touch a Smart Car, too difficult to get parts for and lot of garages won't touch themCaptain Answer said:

Thanks The one she liked the colour of (yes, I know)... lets just say thank god for the mot history checker. The advert didn't mention the huge list of rusty underside advisories/leaks/etc which have been ignored while it's done a grand total of about 90 miles in the last 2 years or so. Clearly time to make it someone else's problem, they're never going to fix it and it's only getting worse as it stands. Daughter, after seeing the big bold list of repeated advisories, now also appreciates that looking behind a shiny/nice colour is vital!

Have a look at Renault Modus, we got one middle of last year for our eldest to learn in. Generally they are purchased by the older generation so have been looked after and not ragged to death unlike the Clio they are based on.The one she liked the colour of (yes, I know)... lets just say thank god for the mot history checker. Ours is a 1.4 petrol and it's an ok drive, and we got it for £1100 but there were other cheaper ones.

Some Italian cars are beautiful, some Italian cars are fast and some Italian cars are Lancia Ypsilons.
